As we approach Autumn, many of us are looking to do some basic chores in our lives. There is getting children ready for school, preparing our homes for winter, or even basic daily maintenance items. (For instance changing the oil in our cars or going to our doctors for a check-up). But have we done the most important preventative care? When we go to confession, we must remember not only to confess our sins, but to work on the root problem of our sins. If we only confess our sins we are just as likely to keep committing the same sins. We also don't have to wait until we are in a state of mortal sin. If we go more often the less likely we are to lapse into that state. So many of us treat the state of our cars, home and physical health as more important than the well being of our soul. Most people would never think to change the oil in their car only once a year, but would do the same for confession. Surely if your car needs regular maintenance, don't you think your soul does as well?
