Gowanie Golf Club was once again the site of the Second Annual Austin Alumni Golf Outing. This year's 180 participants was a 40% increase over last year. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. With 20 graduating classes represented (once again the Class of 1960 had the highest representation with over 25 attendees) there was quite a lot of reminiscing and, of course, the stories of great academic and athletic achievements went on into the night. Did I say ACADEMIC? The day began with scattered showers and a gray sky, but our highly placed connections came through with another beautiful day and 160 golfers began a rather long 18 hole trek. Thankfully, there were liquid refreshments along the way to help make the round and camaraderie more enjoyable. Scores ranged from a fine 71 posted by Paul Zozel (60) to the message "A LOT" posted by a few of our competitors. The winning team picked by blind draw consisted of John Brecht (57), Ken Lucas (58), Don Grossfield (guest 58), and Mike Birg (69). Closest to the pin winners were Jack Staudt (69), Jeff Vaughn (70), Dennis Schroyer (64), Bill Zemmin (63), Brian DeFour (64), and missing out was the mysterious Dr. D. Bucko (can someone please identify this individual for proper recognition?) SPECIAL THANKS TO Mike Barrett (69) for, again this year, the donation of a fine basket of potent potables and golf accessories, Dave Palmer (75) for his help in getting the hole-in-one contest set up, and Dick Ray (66) and Bill Whelan (65) for their generous donations which helped us meet our scholarship goals. This year, through the generous efforts of our alumni, we were able to contribute $3,600 to the St. Clare Elementary School Scholarship Fund which will help two Catholic families give their four children a Catholic Education this fall. (Check out the website for a thank you from the School.) Our efforts to update our files is continuing, and we should be able to contact more alumni in the future. Remember that next year the golf outing will be the Monday after Father's Day, June 16, 2003. There will also be an Alumni Mass held at St. Clare on Saturday, January 11th at 4 p.m. followed by a cocktail reception.
