St. Luke the Evangelist at 209 West Calhoun St., Bruce, MS 38915 US - A little history about St. Luke Parish
A little history about St. Luke ParishSt. Luke the Evangelist Catholic Church is a faith community of 35 families and growing. We first began gathering for Mass in 1995. This core group of faithful met in homes, funeral chapels, community centers, and an old store front. Finally in 1998, after much hard work and the genorousity of donors and grants, the Catholic Community of Calhoun County purchased a permanent home. The former county Health Department became the new home of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish. In October of 1998, Bishop William Houck dedicated the 'new' parish.
St. Luke Parish is a unique parish. The Parish has always had a Lay Leader with Mass celebrated on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month by the sacramental priest. Word and Communion Services (or SCAP) are held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month which are led by the Lay Ecclesial Minister. The first Lay Minister was Amy Giorgio. Amy served St. Luke Parish until July of 2000. Sister Mary Jean Morris, OSF, became the 2nd Lay Pastor in July of 2001 and served until June 30 2011.
Effective July 1, 2011, parish member Deborah A. Holmes was appointed as Lay Ecclesial Minister and parish DRE Vonda Tedford-Keon was affirmed as Pastoral Associate by Bishop Joseph Latino of the Diocese of Jackson. Both are graduates of the Loyola LIMEX program.
