About the BAA Scholarship Fund

BISHOP AGNELLUS ANDREW SCHOLARSHIP FUND

 

 

      The Bishop Agnellus Andrew (BAA) Scholarship Fund is an outreach of the Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals with the purpose of ensuring that minority students from the USA, Canada and students from developing nations have access to training for and a voice in shaping future communications efforts in the Catholic Church.  It was established in 1989 to honor the memory of the late Bishop Agnellus Andrew, OFM, a well-known church communications pioneer who founded the Catholic Radio and Television Center in Hatch End, England, and served as president of Unda-World and as vice-president of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

 

      The membership of the Catholic Academy seek out, invite and encourage aspiring and talented youth to become involved in church communications by providing scholarships and opportunities for advanced education and experience in communication arts as well as internships in diocesan communications offices and religious production houses.  The BAA Scholarship Fund, which seeks both member and non-member contributions, is supported through an annual organizational contribution from the Catholic Academy based on a percentage of membership dues and a portion of every Gabriel entry fee.

 

      Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded annually: one in June and another in December of the current fiscal year.  This opportunity is being provided to undergraduate and first-year graduate students from developing nations and to undergraduate and first-year graduate minority students from the United States and Canada.

     

      Undergraduate Applicants for the scholarship must be completing their first, second or third year of college/university studies.  They must be enrolled as full-time students (taking at least 12 hours credit per semester or term) in courses leading to a degree in communications or a related field.  Students pursuing graduate studies must provide a letter of acceptance and verification of a graduate studies in communications from the graduate school.

 

      Selection of the scholarship winners will be based on aptitude, interest in a career in Catholic communications or a career producing communications media that value and uplift the human spirit; academic standing; demonstration of community service and/or extracurricular activities related to Catholic communications.  Preference will be give to students recommended by Catholic Academy members in good standing.

 

      Upon completion of the scholarship experience, applicants will write a report (500 words or more) for use by the Catholic Academy.
