Eleven television, 7 radio, 3 Spanish-language programs and 2 films have been singled out by a highly competitive national judging process to receive the 2002 Gabriel awards. One radio and one TV station have also been lauded as "station of the year." The Gabriels, presented each year by Catholic Academy for Communication Arts Professionals, the National Catholic Association for Communicators, honor industry professionals who produce films, television and radio programs, features and spot announcements that serve viewers and listeners through the positive, creative treatment of human concerns. The single most important criterion for selecting a Gabriel-winning program is its ability to uplift and nourish the human spirit. (A complete list of winners is attached.) This year’s winners include broadcasters from across the United States and Canada - and recognize achievements produced for national release as well as for markets 1-25 and 26+. A Gabriel-worthy program affirms the dignity of human beings and recognizes and upholds universally-recognized human values such as community, creativity, tolerance, justice, compassion and the dedication to excellence. Special Gabriels are awarded each year to a radio and a television station for consistency in high-quality programming and a strong commitment to community service. This year’s Station of the Year Gabriels once again go to KNOM Radio, Nome, Alaska, and WCVB-TV, Boston, Massachusetts. This is the 10th year for KNOM and the 14th year the Boston ABC affiliate have been honored with the award.
