IretonKC at 3300 Old Courthouse Rd, Richmond, VA 23236 US - NOTES FOR JANUARY...

NOTES FOR JANUARY...

Check Out the January Notes

March for Life:  Bishop Ireton Council of the Knights of Columbus invite you to join them for a free bus trip to Washington, DC for the annual March for Life on Monday, January 23. The bus will leave from St. Augustine Church parking lot at 8:00 AM sharp and return about 6:00 PM. Please call Rich Mayer at 276-1263 for information and reservations.

Fashion Show...May be coming to the Bishop Ireton Council on  March 11. A committee is investigating the possibility of holding this fund raising event. Dillard's department Store is a potential sponsor along with many other businesses. See the flier from Rick Brennan which is attached to this month's calendar insert.

Bingo Workers:  Are desperately needed by your council. As you may have read elsewhere in this newsletter your council donated $88,000 to charity this past year. Although there are almost 300 members of this council only about 25% of the membership volunteer for bingo or kitchen bingo. We need your help. It's only one night every 5 weeks in a smoke fee environment. Please call DGK Rich Mayer @ 276-1263 to volunteer your time.

A Big Thank You to...Art Slack and all those who helped with the annual Christmas party at the VA hospital on Christmas Eve. This well attended and highly appreciated event has been held many years and sponsored by area councils of the Knights of Columbus and the 4th degree of our order. Thanks guys.

Sam Sepe is the Knights of Columbus Insurance representative for our council. Remember that insurance is for the living. Call Sam @ 378-7701

Did You Know???? Because of the combined efforts of members of our Council we were able to donate $88 thousand to charity in 2005. The majority of this amount stayed in the metropolitan area to help those in need. Approximately $15,000 went to Camp Baker. Other organizations that received donations from Council 6189 were Good Samaritan Church, The Comboni Sisters, Crossover Ministries, Special Olympics, The Benedictine Abbey, Commonwealth Catholic Charities and many more organizations as well as many families in need. A big thanks to all who made this possible including our loyal bingo players, Brunswick stew customers and KOVAR supporters. Thank you.

Help...Any member interested in working with council catering functions or preparing the hall for bingo (set -up, tear-down) please call Bobby Brodzinski at 276-9959. These would be paid positions. Your council would like to have a pool of workers who may be interested in earning extra money helping with these functions. An experienced handyman is also needed to do minor repairs at the center.

Sam Sepe Needs Help:  Whether you are a current policy holder of Knights
of Columbus insurance or are planning to purchase insurance, Sam is the man who can help you. He is the council's Kof C insurance agent. Call him at (371-7701) and let him tell you of all the new products that are now available to you, such as long term care, annuities and other necessary insurance products. Remember insurance is for the living.

Used Cell Phones...  One last call for used cell phones. Do you have any
used cell phones lying around the house and you would like to depose of them? Hazel Cimino is collecting them for a charity that assists battered women. Your used cell phone may save a life, many already have. Please drop off your cell phone at the Bishop Ireton Center. Your used phone may save a life.

Sunday Breakfast... The monthly breakfast will resume on Sunday, January 29, 2006. Cost is only $4 per person and $ 2 for children 12 and under. Breakfast begins at 9:30AM and ends at 11 AM. See you than and bring a healthy appetite with you. Call one of the following for information: Rick Brennan @ 748-3706 or Gene Zimmerman @ 796-2209.

The Homeless:  Remember that on the 2nd Thursday of each month your council prepares bag lunches for the homeless. A hot meal is prepared and served to the less fortunate.  Starting time is 8 :30 AM.  Please help this worthy cause.

BIC BITS... The BIC board will meet on Tuesday January 3, 2006  at 7 PM. All members of the council are invited to attend and to express their thoughts.

Brunswick Stew...The vegetables and onions have been cut, the potatoes have been peeled and "eyed" and the chicken has been picked. The stew pots have been cleaned and scrubbed and the paddles have been put away for another year. All this means that Council 6189 has had another successful Brunswick stew sale. Over 1100 quarts of stew were packaged and the majority of that has been sold or accounted for. A big thanks to all those volunteers, led by stew master Horace Scott, who made this event another huge success. The net proceeds of the stew were allocated to Camp Baker for the wonderful work that they do for "God's Children". Thanks again guys and gals, you always come through to make the "stew" a successful fratenal event.

Charity Motions (January)

$250 - Outreach in Love Christmas Party

$200 - Religious Education

$200 - Sacred Heart Church

$200 - St. Augustine Church

$250 - Christian Society for Children and Aging

$1,650 - Camp Baker

The Charity Committee is looking into the frequency of  when our charity awards are distributed. Because the majority of our charitable donations are derived from bingo proceeds it is imperative that we distribute monies to charitable causes according to the percentages as determined by the state gaming commission. Your bingo and charity committees will keep you informed of any changes or procedures.

Adopted Mission ChurchGood Samaritan Church in Amelia County. This little parish of approximately 35 families is located on U.S. Route 360 about 3.5 miles from the Chesterfield County line with Amelia. It is located on the eastbound side of 360 less than a mile from a Shell gas station which is on your left going west.

Need Bingo Help:  Many teams are in dire need of help. Please volunteer for a team by calling Bobby Brodzinski and volunteering. You only have to work one Wednesday evening every five weeks. It's great fellowship and a lot of fun. Husband and wife teams are encouraged to participate in this smoke free environment. Remember this is how your council earns the money to support all of our charities.  The Bingo and Kitchen Schedule for 2006 has been posted.  (Click Here)

Have you taken your Second and Third Degree?   We know that there are many in the council that have not received either of these degrees and, unfortunately,  the records are not up to date.  We are asking any brother who has not taken either of these degrees to contact George Cranford by email (click here) or John Quinn at 273-9995.   Sponsors should also attend degrees to lend support to their canidates.  Please call so that we can provide you with the details. Contact GK Gene Zimmerman (click here)for more information.

A message of importance to all Knights: The Supreme Council has a web page where you may update your address information when necessary.  This will ensure that you receive your Columbia Magazine promptly and keep your membership records up to date.  Please log on to this website and update your information any time your mailing address or email address changes.  A valid email address is required to submit the form to Supreme.

How About A Shirt....or other Knights of Columbus paraphernalia? Brother Joe Aprile and his wife Vickie will be at the June 13th meeting and will display their State Council approved wares. Since they both retired from the Post Office they have formed their own embroidery company known as JOVIC and they have specialized in K of C wear.

Contact by Email...If you have an Email address, please share it with your council. We promise not to bombard you with unnecessary messages but sometimes it is important to send important information (illnesses/deaths; special events) to the membership. Please send your address to George Cranford. His Email address is  Pastwalker@comcast.net
