UPANGA PARISH
Upanga Parish is one of the smallest parishes in the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, in terms of both area and number of the Faithful. The church was built in 1969 by the Capuchins and was dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. It was initially intended to serve a sizable Italian Catholic Community, which was in existence then.
In 1971, Upanga was turned into a Parish and the Church became the ParishChurch to serve an estimated 4,500 Catholics. But over the years this number has gradually diminished due mainly to many African residents, including Catholics, moving to the outskirts of the city. There are now about 1,500 Catholics.
The Parish is administered by the Franciscans Capuchin Fathers of Assisi. Till now the fathers come from the province of Florence. There are also the sisters of St. Gemma of Dodoma in the mission premises heling. The Parish Council is very strong and cooperative..
There are three Masses each Sunday as follows:
7.00 a.m. Swahili Mass
8.30 a.m. English Mass
10.00 a.m. Swahili Mass
The Holy Rosary is recited every Sunday at 5.00 p.m. In the evening of each first Thursday and Friday of the month there are a Eucharistic Hour and the Sacred Heart of Jesus services.
The Parish runs a Nursery and a Tailoring School amongst other activities.
