John L. Cummings, FMS, Ed.D.

Bro. John Cummings is a member of the Marist Brothers of the Schools and currently the Superintendent of Catholic Schools and Centers for the Diocese of St. Petersburg, Florida, with 52 schools and early childhood centers, over 13,500 students and 1200 teachers in five counties: Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus. He was born and raised in Corning, NY and earned a B.A. in French from DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois; a M.A. in French from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Indiana, and a Doctorate in Catholic School Leadership from the University of San Francisco, San Francisco, California.

 

Bro. Cummings taught from 1970-1978 at Mount St. Michael Academy, Bronx, NY and Central Catholic High School, Lawrence, MA. In 1978, he became the Assistant Principal at Marist High School, Chicago, Illinois. In 1986 he became principal at Marist High School, Eugene Oregon and Marist High School, Chicago in 1996. Bro. Cummings served as an adjunct professor in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages at the University of Notre Dame during the summers of 1981-1986. In 1998, he began his tenure as Catholic School Superintendent in the Diocese of St. Petersburg.

 

Bro. John has published several articles in Today’s Catholic Teacher and Momentum and given workshops on Legal Issues and the Catholic School; A School’s Catholic Identity, and the role of a Catholic School Advisory Board.
