“As Catholics, we believe that in the Eucharist, we really and truly encounter the living Chris—body, blood, soul and divinity. In theological terms, Christ’s presence has often been expressed by the word “transubstantiation.” The idea is that although the appearances of bread and wine remain, the essence has become the body and blood of Christ. The use of bread and wine in this sacrament truly signifies many things—sacrifice, offering, “the work of human hands,” “the bread of life,” “spiritual drink,” meal, forgiveness, salvation. But at the core of the Eucharist is Christ—Christ whom we receive under the appearance of bread and wine. In this way we become Christ, and in becoming Christ we are called to be Christ for others.”
