Family Commission—Dolores Garvis

November 22-28, 2009 is National Family Week
Governor Charlie Crist first signed a proclamation declaring November 18-24, 2007 as National Family Week in the State of Florida.

Families Make Connections Count
Thousands of people throughout the United States will celebrate healthy families and communities during the annual National Family Week, taking place during Thanksgiving week. National Family Week is organized by the Alliance for Children and Families and is a wonderful time to build connections that support and strengthen families year-round. These connections make better lives for families and result in changes that improve communities.

Not sure how to get started? Here are simple suggestions of how to celebrate!

  • Get involved in any local National Family Week activities.
  • Meet and get to know your neighbors.
  • Plan a neighborhood supper.
  • Select an issue that can improve your community. Work with local officials to effect change.
  • Organize or participate in a school meeting about improving your child's education.
  • Write a thank-you note to someone who helps your family
  • Encourage employers to consider family-friendly work options such as flexible hours and time off to attend
    school functions.
  • Volunteer with a nonprofit organization on projects that benefit your community.

It is believed that strong families are at the center of strong communities. Everyone has a role to play in making families successful, including neighborhood organizations, businesses, the church, policymakers, and families themselves.
You may be wondering who can participate in National Family Week?
National Family Week welcomes and encourages everyone. Suggestions on who might participate include:

Schools and families can encourage their community to host a school committee hearing and focus on ways to improve your child's education, plan your own National Family Week event at your school, meet and get to know your child's friends and parents, plan a family supper with fellow classmates, or hold a family night function at school featuring interactive games, food, and other fun activities. I know of a Parish that has a Family Faith Night “Celebrating the Saints”. Children are invited to dress as their favorite saint. Activities include a saints parade, “find your saint”, games and prizes and of course snacks.

National organizations, corporations and businesses can provide their support to National Family Week by participating in local National Family Week events, offering family-friendly options such as flexible hours and time off to attend school functions, or conducting awareness campaigns on behalf of National Family Week through various communication materials to their employees, community and board members. They also have the ability to plan and implement National Family Week events held by their local affiliates.

Policymakers can lend their support by making a speech at a local National Family Week event, issue a proclamation declaring National Family Week in their community, spread awareness about National Family Week to other policymakers, provide a written endorsement of National Family Week, or engage in activities that advocate on behalf of vulnerable children and families.  Thank you for your support of families in our Church community.

National Family Week premise: Children do better when their families are strong and families do better when they live in communities that help them succeed. Remember; the family is the backbone of the Church Community
