Come to School of Leaders
You Need More than 3 Days!
By Michael Ciccocioppo, School of Leaders Director
Anyone who thinks they know everything there is to know about our faith and the Cursillo method after living a three-day Cursillo weekend, probably could believe that it is okay for kids to stop learning about Catholicism after they receive confirmation.
Think about it. When you literally translate the full name of our movement from the Spanish, “Cursillos de Cristiandad,” you get, “Short Course in Christianity.”
We’ve all lived the three-day weekend. That’s the short course. But the learning should not stop there. It must continue for the rest of our lives. And so the Cursillo Movement also has a long course in Christianity. It is called the School of Leaders.
We learned that we are all leaders in our unique environments. But some are called to a deeper understanding of Cursillo. Some are called to make the Cursillo Movement an important part of their lives. They find that regular group reunion invigorates and sustains them on their journey of faith. They actively make friends and invite them to Cursillo. And some even serve as team members on Cursillo weekends to make Cursillo a reality for others.
People who group regularly; people who sponsor candidates; people who work on teams; all of these are leaders in the Cursillo Movement who need more than the short course—they need the long course: School of Leaders.
If you think about the body of knowledge that is our faith and the Cursillo as an iceberg, then what you know is probably equivalent to the peak you see that is visible above the water’s surface. In this first year, the School will be like putting on scuba gear and going below the surface to learn the foundations of faith and Cursillo. In the years to come we will (figuratively) put on deep-water diving gear and examine both in even greater depth.
The 2009 School of Leaders Curriculum was designed after careful consideration of members of our Study Committee. Each session will include a 25-minute doctrinal rollo (talk) followed by decuria (table) discussion. Then there will be a 25-minute Cursillo Method rollo followed by table discussion. This year we will explore the recent document issued by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, and the latest edition of the Leader’s Manual published by National Cursillo Secretariat in 2007.
The School will meet generally on the 2nd Saturday of each month at the Cardinal Keeler Center. However, there are a few exceptions. Please note the date and place for each session on the schedule. Each session will start promptly at 10:00 a.m. with the singing of DeColores, and end promptly at Noon with a visit to the Blessed Sacrament.
How is the “study” leg of your tripod? Do you have lots of great intentions that you never seem to fulfill? Do you have books that you have planned to read for some time, but are just gathering dust somewhere? Here is the opportunity for you to do something meaningful, guided by a variety of expert speakers, and supported by your diocesan Cursillo community.
All it takes is two hours a month! And the bonus is that each session will, no doubt, carry you back to your own Cursillo weekend experience with insightful talks, stimulating discussion, song, group reunion and that most important visit together before the Blessed Sacrament. Invite your Cursillista friends to join you. Then you can continue to discuss the things you learned during the session even after you go back home!
There is no registration fee, although your dollarosa is always gratefully accepted. It’s recommended the you purchase a
Leader’s Manual so you can do some reading on your own between sessions. They will be available at each session for $15. If you have another commitment from time to time and cannot make it to a session, we intend to record the sessions and post them on our
website, www.harrisburg-cursillo.org, so you can listen to them before the next session.
