Holy Cross Parish School at 144 East Mount Airy Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19119 US - Resources and Activities Abound

Resources and Activities Abound

      In addition to classrooms for Grades K-8 and small group instruction, Holy Cross Parish School features a computer lab, an art/science room, and a well-stocked library.

      A newly-installed wireless computer network provides Internet access in the computer lab and in all rooms throughout both buildings.

      A classroom set of handheld computers, funded by a state grant, enhances the mathematics curriculum in Grade 4-6.

      The school offers...

...a daily lunch program;

...before-school supervision for children who arrive early;

... an after-school program, guided by an award-winning director;

...state-funded services to non-public schools in the areas of corrective education (remedial math and reading), guidance, psycho-educational evaluation, and speech, staffed by personnel from Elwyn, Inc.

      The school community worships together on at least one occasion each month. Older students pair with younger ones to share their understanding and appreciation of religious and academic celebrations. Catholic students and their parents are offered the opportunity to be immersed in preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation.

      The Christmas program and the instrumental (band) program showcase children's musical talent. Displays of expertise in educational areas such as the annual Curriculum Fair and participation in academic competitions encourage students to develop their intellectual strengths. Assemblies and field trips broaden the base of students' experience.

Student Leaders Witness History

On Thursday, January 3, Student Council Officers and Commissioners, accompanied by Ms. Gallagher (Moderator) and Sister Rosanne (Principal), traveled to the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Philadelphia to participate in the Interfaith Inaugural Service for Mayor Michael Nutter.  The Religious Leaders Council of Greater Philadelphia, led by Co-Conveners Cardinal Justin Rigali, Imam Anwar Muhaiman, and Rabbi David Straus, issued an open invitation for all to join in this service.  Shanelle Harrison, Amber Watkins, Toni Lomax, and Calvin Malcome (eighth graders), Amanda Keaton (seventh grader), Cameron Morris (fifth grader) and the two staff members braved a wind chill of 1 degree to join the Religious Leaders Council, Mayor Nutter, and about 200 others to pray and pledge to work for peace.  The Holy Cross contingent shared some moments of conversation with Mayor Nutter and his wife and with Cardinal Rigali.
