Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 2801 West E Street, North Platte, NE 69101 US - History of Holy Spirit Parish
History of Holy Spirit ParishIn 1973 Bishop John Sullivan announced that St. Patrick's Parish of North Platte would be divided, thus creating a second parish which would be known as Holy Spirit Parish. Father Bernard Nelson was assigned as pastor of the new church. Fr. Nelson arrived in July and set out to build the church. Masses were held at the McDonald School's multi-purpose room on Saturday night and Sunday morning beginning in August. On March 31, 1974 ground was broken on the property at 2801 West E Street. At that time, Nelson Hall and the narthex were built and served the parish for worship, social, and catechitical functions. On August 19, 1979 the present worship area was dedicated. By design the church is semi-circular and seats 425. It is designed so no one is over eight pews from the altar. The office and classroom addition to Nelson Hall was completed in January of 1989.
Renovations to Narthex and Sanctuary began in the Summer of 2010. The Narthex was completely demolished and rebuilt. Phase 1 of the renovation process was completed over the summer and a dedication mass was held in August. There were over 25 priests and Bishop Dendinger presiding at the celebration and rededication. Phase 2 is nearing completion as well. The Faith Formation Center is nearly finished; an Open House is scheduled for December 3rd and 4th.
Plans are being finalized for Phase 3 of our renovation process. Phase 3 will include the Kitchen, Nelson Hall and Offices. Details yet to be approved and revealed.
