Derrick got his start in music at the tender age of 5 when his family began noticing signs of musical interest and put him in piano lessons with Ruth Davis of Louisville, Kentucky. At age 11 he was invited by the music director of St. Paul Catholic Church, Jerry Vititoe, in Louisville to help accompany regularly for the church. Little did he know, the experience and knowledge he gained from that experience (which went on for the following 3 years) would help to shape him into the musician he is today.
In 2000, Derrick became the youngest person in the Archdiocese of Louisville to complete the Archdiocesan Music Director's Certification Program and in 2002, at the age of 14, promptly accepted the invitation to become Our Lady of Consolation's Associate Director of Music.
Since then he has worked for nearly 30 churches in over 6 dioceses in various capacities including Pianist, Organist, Cantor, Choir Director and Interim Director of Music. Career highlights include singing at President Bush's first Inauguration with the YPAS Concert Choir, completing 2 European tours with the YPAS Concert Choir and Centre Singers, and serving as Interim Director of Music at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Danville.
Derrick graduated from the Youth Performing Arts School and duPont Manual High School in Louisville KY in 2004 and completed a BA in the area of music (voice) from Centre College in May of 2008.
Derrick has enjoyed his time at Ss. Francis and John and sees enormous potential in this community. He is an active member of the Knights of Columbus, joined golf group, and will be starting two children's choirs in the fall. He has tremendous respect for the people of Ss. Francis and John and is very happy about growing closer to their already tight-knit community.
