Knights of Columbus 536 at PO Box 241, Cold Spring, NY 10516 US - Knights of Cold Spring
Knights of Cold Spring
The men interested in the project were leaders in the life of the Community and their support assured the success of the undertaking. The task of organizing an entirely new council of the Order was by no means a small one, so the prospective members worked together and soon had an application filed for a charter which was subsequently granted by Supreme Grand Knight, Edward F. Hearn on October 18,1900.
On Sunday, July 29, 1900 a meeting was held at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto for the purpose of organizing a council of Knights of Columbus in Cold Spring. District Deputy John J. Mylos from Florentine Council in Poughkeepsie was present. William H. Casey was elected Temporary Chairman and James McAndrew, Secretary.
On September 9, 1900 a second meeting was held at the law offices of J.B.Southard. Edward P. Casey made a motion that Robert Murray be elected as Temporary Treasurer and William H. Berrigan made a motion that Loretto be the name of the Council after the parish in which the council was to be originated.
William H. Casey was the first Grand Knight of the Council. Under his guidance the new Council flourished and the membership was rapidly increased. The other officers for the first year were Deputy Grand Knight, William H. Berrigan; Chancellor, Gerald W. Grace; Recorder Thomas Murray; Financial Secretary, Andrew J. Knox; Treasurer, Robert G. Murray; Lecturer, Daniel McCarthy; Advocate, Joseph Mitchell; Warden, Joseph Barry; Inside Guard, John Brody; Outside Guard, Thomas Kain; Trustees, Gerald V. Grace, Edward P. Casey and James McAndrew, Jr.
From the date of institution the members of the new Council were most enthusiastic and they worked untiringly to build up a large organization. New members were added regularly and the Council was soon in flourishing financial condition.
On January 13th, 1920, Grand Knight Edward K. Gallagher appointed a committee consisting of Joseph Shea as Chairman and W.H Casey, Thomas Murray, Vincent Murray, J.V. Ball, Lawrence Reilly and Leon Pralatowski, to inquire as to the price and all details pertaining to the purchase of a building on Main Street owned by Mrs. Lloyd Boyd. The building was purchased on May 29th, 1920.
The Council’s record of worthy, meritorious activities and accomplishments in its over 100 years of existence are far too great and lengthy to list here. Today, the Council is steadily increasing its membership and our future plans look quite promising. It is hoped that the principles of the Founders will always be carried out and that our council will always be an influence for good in the Community and for service to God and Country.
