Knights of Columbus Greater Dayton Chapter Meeting 2/20/2008

 

Chapter Minutes

Meeting called to order at 8:11 pm.  Prayer and pledge led by Chapter President Doug Sabo.  Previous minutes from January were distributed by email on February 20, 2008.  If there are any changes or corrections, please email the Chapter Recording Secretary.

           

            Chapter Warden David Rickman excused due to family emergency.

 

Chapter President’s Report

  1. Presentation by Mary Popp and Kim Staggenborg of the Society for the Preservation of Roman Catholic Heritage (SPORCH)

-         Spiritually motivated group of clergy, religious, laity, artisans and concerned individuals working to preserve the spiritual purpose and beauty of Catholic liturgical art items and other artifices.

-         Sponsoring 20 youth to go to Australia for World Youth Day – weeklong retreat which ends with Mass with the Pope.  15 youth sponsored, need money for 5 more.

-         Looking for sponsors who will purchase artwork or pay for printing of Prayer for Vocations.

            No Report.

Councils 1610, 4587, and 14400 paid dues.

Upcoming Degrees:

            Council 500: 1st and 2nd Degree on March 9 at 1 PM

            Council 500: 3rd Degree on March 16 (Palm Sunday)

Council 10215: 1st Degree on March 5, 7PM candidate call, 7:30 Degree – held at St. Francis of Assisi on Wilmington Pike.  Degree in cafeteria behind church – enter via backside.

Council 3724: 1st Degree on March 6 at 7 PM

 

Committee Reports

Football Awards Banquet – Jim Deime

            No Report.

 

Serra Club / K of C Youth Ministry Awards – Henry Borchers

-         Packets containing: Program, Letter to Pastor and Youth Ministry leader, Nomination form distributed at meeting.

-         Nominations need to be submitted for Youth in Ministry Award by March 17.

-         Typical contribution is $150.00 per council – due in January – you get points for Youth in Ministry.  Make check to Serra Club of Dayton.  Only THREE Councils have contributed: 3724, 4587, and 10215.

-         Program is at Immaculate Conception Church, April 20, 2007 at 2:30 pm

-         Please get contributions in.

 

Paul Gruhler Award – Paul Dunigan

Only one bid to host dinner – Council 3724 Fairborn. (Joint effort between Fairborn and Huber Heights)

Submit nominations by April 16. 

Dinner is Sunday May 4th:  5:30 PM Social, 6 to 7 PM Dinner, 7 PM Award.  Bar open all night.  Cost $8.00 per person.

 

Rosary Rally – Bob O’Connor

No Report.

 

VA Chairman’s Report – Patrick Ewing

Terry Cooney substituted report in absence of Patrick Ewing.  Informed us of organization in the Dayton area known as “Honor Flight Veterans”.  This organizations provides free trips for WWII vets to go to DC and see the WWII Memorial.  Organization is looking for help - $250 sponsors a vet.  $10000 sponsors a plane full of vets.  www.honorflight.org

 

Shrine / KofC Golf Stagg – Bob Babal

            No Report.

 

KofC Columbian Classic – Jim Deime

Columbian Classic was held on October 12.  100 golfer and 15 priests and seminarians.  Held every Columbus Day to show appreciation to priests and to encourage vocations.  After golf, everyone at Prime Rib at Christopher Club.  $4600 raised for vocations in Archdiocese.  Next year will be at same place – Community Golf Course and dinner at Christopher Club.  Price remains at $65.

 

State Ceremonials Director – LaVern Fortkamp

Informed meeting of actions of 3rd Degree team.

-         In Sidney last Sunday.

-         Next Sunday: Batesville IN

-         Celina: March 2

-         West Chester: April 27

-         3rd Degree requested in Wheeling WV – currently being considered.

 

District Deputy Coordinator- Steve Mangan

-         Regional Free Throw on Sunday

o       Sign in at 1 pm, Program at 2 pm

            None.

 

New Business

  1. Paul Dunigan made motion made for full page advertisement by Chapter in 4th Degree Exemplification Program Book.  Motion was passed by voice vote without objections.
  2. Hank Borchers made motion for contribution to be made in amount of $500.00 to SPORCH. Motion was passed by voice vote without objections.
  3. Ed Ponder made motion that artwork given to us by SPORCH (see above) for donation of $500.00 be raffled off with all proceeds being given to SPORCH.  Spirited debate ensued on whether raffle proceeds should go to SPORCH or be cost-reimbursement to Chapter.  Motion was passed by voice vote without objections – all proceeds from raffle or auction go to SPORCH.  Ed Ponder was appointed to run auction/raffle.
  4. St. John the Baptist Assembly (4th Degree) has petitioned for membership in the Dayton Chapter. Paul Dunigan pointed out that 4th Degree Assemblies are guests, not members, and do not pay dues. Assembly has been admitted to Chapter.
  5. Chapter President Doug Sabo read letter from State Treasurer asking for support for Hospitality Room at Exemplification in March.  Motion made to donate $200.00. Motion was passed by voice vote without objections.
  6. Chapter President Doug Sabo read letter from Donna Theiman of Friends for Life (spoke at meeting in January – see January minutes). Letter asked for $200.00.  Motion made to donate $200.00 to Friends for Life. Motion was passed by voice vote without objections.
  7. Chapter President Doug Sabo asked for motion to sponsor a WWII veteran for trip to DC.  It was pointed out that we do not sponsor the person, but the cost of the trip.  Person is picked from a list.  Chapter Recording Secretary Thomas spoke in support of motion. Motion was passed by voice vote without objections.
  8. It was noted that a total eclipse of the moon would occur at 10 pm.  Meeting attendees seemed to be in approval of the eclipse, but a voice vote was not called by the chair.

-         DD Ponder reported that on March 1 at Incarnation from 8:30 am to 4 pm there would be an Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The Monstrance being used is one of 6 Monstrances blessed by Pope John Paul II before his death.  Prayers from 3 pm to 4 pm will be prayers for vocations.

-         DD Ponder noted that Council 10215 will have a golf league at Holly Hills in Waynesville on Thursday afternoons at 4 pm, starting on May 1 and encouraged all Knights to participate.

Just completed Free Throw Contest. Provided support for DD#5 for District Shootout.

Ladies appreciation dinner was a success.

Donated $450 to purchase “Handbooks of Prayer” for 5 northern churches RCIA Programs.  Will be given out in late March.

Initiated contact with both local Boy Scout Troop and Cub Scout Pack this past week.

Valentine’s Day Dinner had 70 people

Fish Fry at St Mary’s Parish Center.  $10 adults, $5 children 11 and under, $7 Seniors 60 and older, $30 max per family.  Every Lenten Friday except Good Friday.

 

Assembly Reports

            Fr. Kulhman – March 6 – Annual Orientation at 730 pm.  Letters sent to candidates.  March 8 – Archdiocese Meeting at 930 am at Mangan Banquet Center. Support the Program Book.  Come and see the new 4th Degree. (Paul Dunigan)

 

Msgr. Buckley – Reverse Raffle – Tickets were $25, all were sold.  Food was left over. (Bill Gazzerro)

State Treasurer’s Report: Treasurer thanked us for support of Hospitality Room.  Delegate information is coming for the State Convention in Columbus.  Encouraged ticket sales.
