                                WHY I SHOULD BE
                              A KNIGHT OF COLUMBUS

  1. As an integral part of the world’s largest and most dynamic catholic
fraternal organization, you will be united with more than 1.7 million
brother Knights and their families in over 13,000 local councils in the
United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, Poland, Central
America and the Caribbean.

  1. Your personal involvement as a Knight will provide opportunities, in
charity and fraternity, for service to the Church at the local, diocesan
and universal levels; to your communities; and to the less fortunate
in our midst.

  1. Your active participation in council affairs; spiritual, fraternal, family,
social, civic- oriented, athletic and recreational –will serve as a school
of leadership and enable you to develop qualities that enhance your
strengths and abilites.

  1. You will enjoy a sense of “belonging” in an organization that shares in
your religious beliefs, brings together like-minded men joined in a
common cause, and offers opportunity to develop and cement friendships
for years to come.

  1. Your concerns for your family and for your retirement years can be
addressed by the Order’s low cost insurance program, conducted by
Brother Knights for brother Knights, and assure their security and your
Peace of mind.

  1. You will share in a sense of pride all Knights feel in knowing that their
Order is second to none in support of our Holy Father, our bishops and
Priests; in working with our fellow man, especially those most in need;
and in binding together to preserve traditional values in the face of
attacks against the family and innocent human life.

Dear Brother Knights & Fellow Christians

Council 13653 Howard City,MI. is embarking on a fund raising drive to raise money for the purchase of a Handicap Van for a fellow Knight.

Carl Oakes was injured diving accident at age 15 and now he is over 40. He is in a wheel chair and has a very limited poverty level income. Recently his 1999 Ford Windstar

had the EMC Controller fail and he is no longer able to drive it.

With a handicapped person here in this area of Michigan in order to get a drivers license  (which he already has) they have to go to Mary Free bed Hospital and they determine what special hand controls- computer controller device is needed for them to drive the vehicle. This controller alone costs  $39,269.00 to match his prescription that would allow him to drive the vehicle. The Price of a new 2007 Van with 34 miles with the automatic Ramp system needed is $45,838. The total price for this Van that meets his specifications is $85,107 and a newer van would be considerably more. As you can see this is a somewhat captive market.

Carl is very active in the Knights and Christ the King Church in Howard City, MI. He helps teach CCD classes and is an inspiration to all of us. He is an Icon at our Church he is an avid outdoorsman. He misses his Van it simply put is his livelihood. He would help transport other handicapped people to doctor visits and etc. Carl always puts other people ahead of himself.

Could you please tell other fellow Knights? Carl’s picture is below. Anyone wanting to donate money to this cause can send it to the address below or if there are any questions call Father Jim Wyse (4th degree Knight) 231-937-5757 or our District Deputy Joe Lynch 231-972-7789.
