St. Mark the Evangelist Youth Ministry sponsored their first Food Fast retreat this Lent. Food Fast is Catholic Relief Service’s 24-hour hunger awareness retreat for Catholic youth. Focusing on global poverty and hunger, Food Fast offers a journey of solidarity with our brothers and sisters overseas, as a way of living out our Catholic faith. Sidewalk Counselors Pray So That Children In The Womb Are Protected
In 2006, Bishop Robert N. Lynch of the Diocese of St. Petersburg began the Ministries of Mercy initiative to support and foster parish ministries that serve the poor, suffering, and marginalized. The initiative focuses on five areas where the need is the greatest: food & clothing, shelter, life, visitation, and health. With the help of volunteers, the Ministries of Mercy are currently serving in various parishes and the following story highlights the Respect Life Ministry of Nativity Catholic Church.
On Friday, April 2, 2010, Good Friday, more than twenty parishioners of Nativity Catholic Church and surrounding parishes gathered outside of Tampa Women’s Center, a clinic that performs abortions, to pray the Holy Rosary, Stations of the Cross and the Divine Mercy Chaplet to unite the sufferings of aborted babies with those of Christ.
Providing help to the Haitian Refugees
Jean Claude Marcelin who wears a black shirt and jean shorts sits in a house in Tampa, Florida happy to be alive. On January 12th, he was trapped under the rubble of his home for three days after the eight largest earthquake ever recorded hit Haiti. When he was rescued, he had internal injuries, broken bones, and was sent to the United States to receive medical care. His mother, Annette Marcelin, a shop owner, who lost everything in the earthquake, accompanied him.
The 3rd Annual Brake the Cycle of Poverty Bike Ride was a big success. With all of the generous contributions, more than $3,200 was collected for Catholic Charities, which is the sponsor of Pinellas Hope, and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. More than 70 participants came out to Starkey Park for the bike ride, our largest ride to date.
