Ministries of Mercy: "Living the Beatitudes"

LUTZ  Bishop Robert Lynch told about 200 Ministry of Mercy volunteers that they were living the Beatitudes.

“You are the companions of the disadvantaged and the poor,” Lynch told the crowd gathered Sept. 13 for the Ministries of Mercy convening at the Bethany Center. “You are the companions of our friends who struggle day-in and day-out just to survive.”

The luncheon brought volunteers together for lunch as a way to say thank you, to provide a place for them to network and give them a forum for swapping ideas.

The Ministries of Mercy are the charitable works provided in the diocese. These include a wide range of ministries, from the Mobile Medical Unit and pregnancy centers to visiting the homebound and housing the homeless. The Bishop said that the Ministries of Mercy make Christ present to others.

“Preaching the Gospel means not only saying it but living the Gospel,” Lynch said. “We’re here today because we echo the words of St. Paul – woe to us if we don’t preach the gospel.”

Joining Lynch were Heath Ministry director Frank Murphy, Shelter Ministry director Sheila Lopez, Life Ministry director Sabrina Burton Schultz, Food and Clothing Ministry director Peter Burns and Visitation Ministry director Deacon Peter Andre.

“The gab that goes on here, that’s a good thing,” said Murphy.

For Dolores Hazard, a parishioner at St. Lawrence in Tampa, being involved with Life Ministry as a Respect Life volunteer for 22 years was never a second thought.

“I just feel life is one of the most precious gifts God gave us,” Hazard said, holding her 2-month-old grandson, Jacob Robens, who attended the lunch along with mother Angela Robens. “It is the most precious miracle from God and we should treasure it.”

Burns, in giving an overview of Living Eucharist, Bishop Robert Lynch's diocesan-wide, multi-year process to foster a deeper experience and understanding of Eucharist, said, "We are called to be what we receive… It means being the hands and feet of Jesus. You're already ahead of the curve."
