In 1911 Rev. W.H. O'Keefe began to minister in Logan County. Mass was celebrated in private homes until a church was built. Members of the original community were employed in the area coal mines. Many were Italian immigrants. Property on City View Hill was acquired in 1915 from the Manley Coal Company. Six years later, our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish was built under the direction of Rev. Lawrence Gallagher. The Pallottine Missionary Sisters came in 1943 to staff the parish school.
Ground was broken in 1947 for a new church, which was completed in one year. St. Mary Parish, Holden, was created out of Mount Carmel in 1961 and operated independently until both parishes were merged in 1996 to form St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Since 2003, our parish has been staffed by Glenmary Home Missioners. Our current pastor is Fr. Tom Charters.
