The Day The Sun Danced!

What is the significance of Our Lady of Fatima? Between May 13 and October 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared six times to three shepherd children near Fatima, Portugal. She told the children She had been sent by God to spread the news that Heaven would grant peace to all if Her requests for prayer, reparation and consecration were heard and obeyed.

Why are we celebrating Our Lady of Fatima now? The Miracle of the Sun, commonly referred to as the Day the Sun Danced, occurred just after midday on October 13, 1917, witnessed by 30,000 - 100,000 people in Fatima. The three children spread the news that at high noon, a great miracle would be performed in a field near Fatima. The people gathered and, after a period of rain, the sun appeared as a spinning disc in the sky. It was said to cast multicolored lights across the area, and careen toward the people in a zigzag pattern. Their previously wet clothes and the muddy ground around them suddenly dried. According to the three children, Our Lady performed the miracle "so that all could believe."

The visions of Fatima were officially declared "worthy of belief" in October, 1930. Five successive Popes have publicly approved of the apparitions and Her message. Saint Pope John Paul II went on Pilgrimage to Fatima twice.
