NCCW Members Approve New Bylaws

National Council of Catholic Women at 200 N. Glebe Road, Suite 703, Arlington, VA 22203 US - PREGNANT WOMEN SUPPORT ACT

PREGNANT WOMEN SUPPORT ACT

The NCCW Executive Committee recently voted to support the passage of the Pregnant Women Support Act, a bill recently introduced in Congress that would give pregnant women practical alternatives to abortion.  Among other things, it would provide a toll-free number to direct women to sources of assistance and support both during and after pregnancy, would ensure that adequate medical care is available to pregnant women, and would help colleges and universities assist their pregnant students with resources like campus housing and child care so they can continue their educations.  This is a great opportunity for the National Council of Catholic Women to let our voices be heard and is an issue that we can support 100%.

The bill has been introduced in the Senate (S. 2407) by Senator Robert Casey of Pennsylvania and has been referred to the Senate Finance Committee.  It currently has no co-sponsors.  In the House, it has been introduced (H.R. 3192) by Rep. Lincoln Davis of Tennessee and has been referred to several committees, including House Education and Labor (Subcommittee on Healthy Families and Communities) and Energy and Commerce (Subcommittee on Health).  To date it has been co-sponsored by the following Members:

Although the bill probably will not pass this year, the current proposal will lay the groundwork for passage perhaps in the next Congress, and so it is important for us to obtain as much Congressional support as possible now, in the early stages.

Our first task is to contact our Senators and Representatives to urge them to co-sponsor the bill if they have not done so and to thank them if they have.  If your Member of Congress appears on the above list, please write to express thanks for his or her support.  You may use the attached sample letter as a guide.  To determine whether your Senator or Member of Congress has signed on as a co-sponsor since the date of this Fact and Action Sheet, visit http://thomas.loc.gov/, enter the bill number, click on Bill Summary and Status File, then click on co-sponsors.

If your Senator or Member has not co-sponsored the bill, please write to urge him or her do so, using these sample letters as a guide if you wish.  We will keep you informed of the bill’s progress and request further action as needed.
