"Diane Andraska, a rural Jackson County artist, painted artwork for a prayer card that will be distributed worldwide.

The watercolor painting, a copy of which was presented to Pope Benedict XVI last month, depicts Mary holding baby Jesus over Earth, partially filled with seven lilies.

“I was humbled,” said Andraska, a devout Catholic. “So many people say ‘You must be so proud,’ but I’m not. The whole thing is very humbling.”

Andraska said she picked up her love for watercolors from her mother. She remembers getting a paint set for Christmas when she was in the fourth grade and has been painting ever since.

After earning an associate’s degree in art from Western Technical College, Andraska has made a career out of painting and photography.

“The Holy Spirit is in everything I paint,” said Andraska, the mother of three, who has lived and worked in Irving with husband Dave for 15 years. “I look up and watch the sun rise and sun set, and I think ‘God is in everything every day.’”

Andraska has tried acrylic and oil painting but said she enjoys watercolor best. She has created many works of art that have been sold or given away, but her favorite is a small painting of a poinsettia she did in 2005 that sits in the living room. That is one she’ll never part with.

“I just like it,” she said. “I’ll never sell it.”

Father John Steiner of St. Kevin Catholic Church in Melrose says he sees his parishioner’s faith in the prayer card watercolor.

“It was more than a work of art — it was a work of faith and love on her part,” Steiner said. “I was impressed by the depth of hidden meanings. (The painting) is done with prayer. I was impressed by the harmony between the prayer and the painting and the hidden symbolism.”

The prayer cards will be distributed by the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations.

“Our hope is that everyone who sees the image or prays the prayer or sings the hymn will draw closer to our Lord Jesus Christ through the intercession of his mother, Mary, and that they may experience the fullness of his peace,” Hurley said."

"O Loving God, your Son, Jesus, came into
this world to do your will and leave us His peace.
Through the intercession and example of our Blessed Mother Mary,
Queen of Peace, grant us the wisdom and
humility to reflect that peace to the world.
Inspire our thoughts, words and deeds to bear witness
to your presence in our hearts.  May your Holy
Spirit fill us with every grace and blessing
so that we may pursue what leads to peace
for all humanity.  Amen."

Sally Jackson, President NCCW Friends for WUCWO
