A MESSAGE FROM FATHER BOB
There is hope for persons who have an addiction: First, admit one cannot control the addiction, and second, turn to God, Who can give strength.
The results of addiction can be horrendous to the person’s mind, body and soul. Added to that are its effects on the family, employment and social life.
In addition to alcohol and other drugs, a person can become overly dependent on gambling, pornography, work, shopping or video games. Successful outcomes are possible. First, pray that God will give you the wisdom and grace to succeed – eg, The Serenity Prayer. Second, speak with a priest or someone who is a counselor. Third, go to a twelve-step program such as AA, which has a record of helping people.
Local resources are: a hospital for emergency treatment; the Center for Prevention (973-383-4787) for counseling and information; twelve-step meetings.
The good news is that addiction is a treatable disease. Although it cannot be cured, it can be managed.
Lord, grant me the serenity to change the things I can, to accept the things I cannot change, and the wisdom to know the difference.
Father Bob
