2. On Saturday March 14, 2009, Msgr. David LiPuma will celebrate the 4:30 pm Mass recognizing the actual 100th anniversary of the founding of the Mission Church on March 14, 1909. A reception will follow in the school hall. No tickets are necessary.
At the turn of the last century, a growing number of Italian immigrants settled in the Lancaster and Depew area, enticed by construction and railroad employment. In response to their spiritual need to worship in their native language, the Mission Church was chartered to meet their needs. It was officially dedicated by Rt. Rev. Nelson Baker, Vicar General of the Diocese on March 14, 1909. It was given the name of “Our Lady of Pompeii”, honoring our Blessed Mother under the same title as the world famous Shrine at Pompeii, Italy.
3. On May 17th, 2009, the closing event for the Centennial will begin with the 12:00 noon Mass celebrated by Bishop Edward Kmiec. Mass will be followed by a banquet at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens at 2:00 pm.
The menu includes an open bar, assorted cheeses, fruit trays, chicken franchaise, vegetables and potatoes, cake and desserts.
Tickets are $45 per person. Tickets can be purchased by contacting Geri Hoffman at 656-8475. Checks should be made payable to Our Lady of Pompeii and mailed to 158 Laverack Avenue, Lancaster, NY 14086.
