General education – Our Lady of the Mountains School follows the curriculum guidelines established by the Diocese of Lexington Office of Education and by the Department of Education for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Textbooks are current and continually updated. The present academic program for the students includes the following subjects, depending on grade level: Math; Science; Social Studies; Language Arts (Reading, Phonics, English, Spelling & Handwriting); Religion and Family Life; Art; Music; Computer Skills; Sign Language, Library Science, and Foreign Language (Spanish). Writing and study skills are incorporated into the daily curriculum.
Report cards – The academic year runs on a quarterly basis. Report cards are distributed at the end of each quarter.
Homework – Homework is assigned on a regular basis. This activity provides the student with the opportunity to reinforce and practice skills that are taught during the school day. The amount of homework increases as the grades progress. Although homework is usually not given on the weekends, this provides a good time for the students to do extra reading and/or to work on long-range assignments.
Academic projects are conducted through the year.
Parent – Teacher conferences – All parents are expected to attend Parent / Teacher conferences, usually scheduled at the end of the first and third grading period. During conferences there will be a discussion with the classroom teacher concerning student progress. The first report card will be given at this time. Parents may also schedule other conference times with a teacher. Parents are encouraged to communicate regularly about the progress of their child.
Testing program – All schools in the Diocese of Lexington are involved in the annual testing program. This standardized test, given in the spring, involves several days of testing.
Field studies – Field studies are educational activities that take place outside of the regular classroom setting. They are considered to be part of the curriculum and are valuable learning tools. Parent input and assistance is appreciated. Parents are always notified of an upcoming field study for a specific class and are required to sign permission slips for the event.
