Dr. John C. Monk, age about 45 years, of Sampson County, was baptized conditionally into the Catholic Faith on October 27, 1871, also was his wife, Euphemia Eason Monk and two daughters, Anna and Flora.
Anna Monk married Thomas Underwood. They had a daughter named Cora who married Lewis Allen Gregory. Cora and Lewis who lived across the road from the Church had a son named Francis Emmett Gregory. Francis Emmett had a son named Francis who has a daughter named Dianna Gregory. She is married to Patrick Nobles and they have two sons, Gregory and Jacob. Therefore, Dianna Nobles and her two sons are direct descendants of the first Catholic family in Newton Grove.
JAMES CALVIN WILLIAMS, AGED 48 AND HIS WIFE, Bethenia Eldridge, aged 45, were baptized at St. Mark Catholic church in Newton Grove, NC on December 15, 1880. They had three children who have descendants attending Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at the present. Authenia Williams married Thomas Ervin Royals. They had 10 children. Their son, JAMES MARION ROYALS married Ethel Westbrook. From this union, a daugther, TERESA ROSE ROYALS, was born. She married Chester Jones. They have one daughter, WANDA JONES.
JAMES CALVIN WILLIAMS and BETHENIA ELDRIDGE also had a daughter named IDA JANE WILLIAMS who married William Eli Baggett. They had four children. Their son, BERNARD JAMES married Clemetine Tart. They had a son, WILLIAM ELI BAGGETT who married IMOGENE CLIFTON. From this union was born GLENN BAGGETT who married Jennifer Thornton. Glenn is an active member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
OPHELIA WILLIAMS, another daughter of JAMES CALVIN WILLIAMS and BETHENIA ELDRIDGE, married Columbus Monroe Tart. They had eleven children. Their daughter, WINIFRED CECELIA TART married Lischer Raynor. Winifred and Lischer had two daughters--ANNA MARGARET who married Enoch Eldridge Godwin and JEAN OPHELIA who married George Godwin, brother to Enoch. Anna Margaret's two sons, JOE, who is married to Susan Crumpler, and JAMES, who is married to Cora Jones, and their children and grandchildren are active members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Three of Jean's for children, CHRIS, ELAINE who is married to James (Jimmy) Butler, CECELIA who is married to Douglas Banks are also active members of the Church as are Elaine's and Cecelia's children.
OPHELIA WILLIAMS and Columbus Monroe Tart also had a son, RUPERT CELESTER TART who married Ada Pearl Norris. They had a son named DWIGHT DAVID TART who is married to Deborah Gregory and they have a son, DWIGHT DAVID TART, JR. who attends Mass with them at Our Lady of Guadalupe.
