The history of Catholic Masses held on
Author: Msgr Hunt Authored on: 6/6/1999 |
It was discovered that the first Mass said in the first Christian settlement in the new world was celebrated on our island on Assumption Day in 1559. A white cross stands on a dune off Ft.Pickens Rd to commemorate it. It wasn’t until 1979, however, that the establishment of a Mission Church got underway. The first of many Masses for the Mission was said on June 17, 1979 at The Holiday Inn on Ft Pickens Rd. Despite hurricanes and other obstacles which followed, Masses continued to be held there and at other motels and “lounges” until finally a lease was obtained for the building of a structure to celebrate Mass on an ongoing basis. Ground was broken for the building of Our Lady of the Assumption multi-celebrational center in June 1989. A little more than a year later, on August 15, 1990, the Solemnity of Our Lady of the Assumption, the newly completed building was dedicated. Our new Church is directly in front of our multi-celebrational center. Ground breaking took place June 28,1998. The first Mass in the new Church was celebrated on the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Assumption, August 15, 1999. We need your prayers and financial assistance to successfully support our permanent home for the Holy Eucharist on Pensacola Beach.
