Our local Catholic community celebrates our diversity. We are a good example of what the famous Irish novelist James Joyce meant when he said of the Catholic Church: "Here comes everybody!"
We have members of various races and ethnic groups who trace their origins to many different countries. Among our members are people from Korea, Poland, Mexico, Cuba, England, Ireland, India, and the Phillipines. Our American born members include Asians, Afro-Americans, Hispanics, Irish, Germans, Polish, and many more. They have come to Giles County from every part of the U.S. including Hawaii. We also have representatives of several language groups. People from many different parts of the world and from many different cultures feel welcome in our Church.
One example of this occurred in one of the local nursing homes. The social worker called the church to ask for someone to come and be with a Cuban family whose 91 year old mother was apparently near death and the daughter was having a hard time coping with the situation. The parish coordinator whose Irish and German ancestors settled in Wisconsin came. Prayer and consolation in English and Spanish followed. The doctor, a Filipino, joined in the prayers. The priest, from Kerala, in India, came to celebrate the anointing of the sick. The younger Cuban friend of the family remarked that it was like having the United Nations in one little room, but what was really happening was a Catholic moment!
