Music Opportunities

  • Robert Whitaker directs the Boys Choir at the Cathedral of Christ the King and is the music director there.  Practices are currently held on Thursday afternoons, 3:15 - 4:30 p.m. for boys age 7 until the voice changes.  The choir will sing for a CTK Mass (alternating Saturday 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 11:00 a.m. Masses once each month).  This is a wonderful opportunity for our sons to learn/practice reading music notation, vocal technique, and blending their voices to worship our God.

Membership currently stands at 5 boys.  While the 5 boys do nicely as a small group on their own, this number needs to grow a bit.  If you know of others who may be interested, please encourage them to contact Robert at (859) 335-3693 or rwhitaker@cdlex.org

  • Also, Christie Pabin, Kindermusik teacher and lead singer for Christ the King's LifeTeen Band, has information about her Kindermusik classes on her web site http://www.christie.kindermusik.net.  We have certainly enjoyed these classes in their pre-K, K and 1st grade years with other wonderful teachers before Christie completed her certification/training.

  • If you are interested in your children learning a string instrument (violin, viola, cello, base) at a reasonable cost, you may be interested in the University of Kentucky Strings project.  The program is run by UK Music faculty and graduate students.  It is open to the public at large.  The students are broken up into three groups - Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced.  Beginners meet from 9 - 10 am each Saturday (starting Sept. 22), and the Intermediate and Advanced groups meet from 10 am - noon each Saturday (starting Sept. 15).  The students break up into small groups for half their sessions, and then meet as an orchestra the second half.  Each semester concludes with a public recital.  More information is available at:

  • Fr. Valentine Young, OSF, has recently started a Gregorian Children's choir at St. Peter's Catholic Church.  A number of SJHS families have already been involved and enjoy it immensely.   The choir is open to all ages.  Currently, children from 2nd grade through 9th grade are participating.  If you are interested in being a part of the choir, or would like to find out more about it,  you are more than welcome to come to one of their practices.  The choir typically practices on Friday mornings, and currently sings at one of the Latin masses per month at St. Peters.  The practice lasts about 45 minutes.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Carolyn Gedney at 231-8124.
