African Catholics in Atlanta

St. Paul of the Cross has a painting of St. Charles Lwanga and the other 21 Ugandan Catholic and Anglican martyrs and canonized saints. The painter is Passionist priest, Fr. Michael Moran, C.P. Twenty Two Ugandans were murdered, or tortured to death in July of 1885 for refusing to renounce their Christian faith, even in exchange for their lives. Today, Uganda is a Christian country of 2 million Catholics.
 
Officials estimate that there are about 2,000 Nigerian Catholics in the Atlanta archdiocese.
 
For Pentacost, it is a tradition at St. Paul of the Cross to have one of their own African Catholics to read the Bible in his native language.
 
Ugandan Priest Visits His Home in Atlanta. Fr. Augustine Wafula has resided with us at St. Paul of the Cross from July to September 2001 and is again staying with us in 2008.
 
Cardinal Francis Arinze Cardinal Francis Arinze, originally from Nigeria, visited Atlanta in April 1999. He presided over a prayer and benediction at Christ, The King Cathedral, and celebrated mass at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Kennesaw.  Cardinal Arinze is rumored to be a strong candidate as the next Pope. As a cardinal, he is a member of the College of Cardinals, and voted upon who will succeed Pope John Paul II.
