Columba-Brigid Montessori Early Childhood program is to serve educationally and economically disadvantaged children in the inner city and to act as a community resource for children, their families and others. We provide a learning environment that emphasizes Christian values and the uniqueness of each individual. It is in this atmosphere that we foster a lifelong joy of learning, inner peace and respect that creates the foundation for a harmonious world community. PHILOSOPHY The Montessori philosophy of education is based on the uniqueness of each child. Given the characteristics of a warm and nurturing environment where the individual is respected, the child is the center of his/her learning. Age appropriate activities are prepared to enrich the learning environment so that the child has the freedom to choose what work will be done. Using a multi-sensory approach to learning, the child has a greater chance for an optimum of growth and development. Throughout the learning experience, emphasis is placed on strengthening intangible qualities such as concentration, self-direction and self-discipline, which will enable the students to become successful he-long learners. By careful observation of each individual learner, the teacher is able to guide and direct each one, when and if this is necessary. With the freedom to choose their own work, children progress as a result of inner motivation rather than competition. The multiage groups allow the children to learn from one another in a natural family-like setting SCHOOL OVERVIEW Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its students. FACULTY Our qualified Montessori Teachers are dedicated to teaching Christian Morals & Values and academic excellence to our students. MONTESSORI PROGRAM Our Montessori program for the 3-6 year old multiage class consists of a strong element of language development. A multi-sensory approach to learning engages the learner in a variety of activities using many manipulative materials. From the beginning, children have opportunities to interact with their classmates and participate in many age appropriate, practical life activities such as zipping, tying, buckling, snapping, dusting, polishing, washing, and sweeping. These activities give each child a greater sense of independence. Throughout the Montessori Process, the children are making careful observations and drawing on their own conclusions. The teacher will guide the learner at the appropriate times. WHAT IS MONTESSORI EDUCATION? Dr. Maria Montessori, a noted Italian Physician and educator, observed young children through her work and drew the following conclusions: * The most important learning years are birth to 6 years. * Children strive toward idependence. * Children progress at their own rate in their own unique way. * Creating an interesting, challenging environment during the child's early years can lead to a higher adult level of intelligence.
