and Technology Initiative

Among the many blessings at St. Sebastian Parish and School are families who understand the importance, and support the benefits, of Catholic education. Three years ago, we embarked on a series of projects to ensure that we are providing our students the very best in academic learning, grounded in faith and ethical and moral values.

The first project was the $100,000 upgrading of the Technology Lab, network, website, and classroom computers completed in 2004. Following that successful model, we next launched the $60,000 Change Our World program to impact the future of our students through math, science and technology.

All of the wonderful opportunities for our students in the Change Our World program were made possible through the generosity of individual parish donors and a $10,000 grant from the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. One of the keys to this successful effort was a small group of devoted supporters of Catholic Education who pooled their resources to create a $20,000 fund used to match individual gifts of $250 and more.

The main thrust of Change Our World was the renovation and upgrading of the school Science Lab and safety equipment. The work has been ongoing since summer. It is now complete and here are some of the fantastic things made available for our students:

New, built-in custom cabinetry with locks for safety and space for displaying science exhibits and student work
New lab equipment, including microscopes, scales and tons of other science equipment and supplies for hands-on experimentation
Science Lab completely cleaned and newly painted
Counter workspace and three laptops with wireless Internet access
Five refurbished mobile lab stations
Texas Instruments’ latest TI-nSpire graphing Calculators, and calculator-based measurement tools
Flash drives for teachers and students in grades 4-8
Technology curriculum software
Wall-mounted fire blanket
Eye wash station
First aid kit and fire extinguishers
New Tables and Stools
Supplementary books and videos
For students in grades K-3, a portable cart with a laptop, projector, camera, and microscope is now available for use in their classrooms.
A new secure first floor science storage cabinet is loaded with hands-on science equipment for grades K-3.
Two local artists worked with several of our talented students and parents to create a modern science mural in the lab. It depicts many of the exciting branches of science that will be explored in the hands-on laboratory and is just one more way Saint Sebastian School hopes to inspire our future scientists.
