Salesian Cooperators of St Philip the Apostle Province at Eastern United States, Eastern United States 00000 - Cooperator Formation-Membership
Membership in the Association of Salesian Cooperators is preceded by an initial formation period called candidacy. Membership is open to those 18 and older. This period lasts about two years and is a time of education and discernment. The Candidate learns about the Salesian Mission; the larger Salesian Family and the Cooperator vocation in particular. During this time, the Candidate becomes associated with a local Center or Unit. A Unit is a group of Cooperators who meet once a month to share their faith and their work. At the conclusion of the formation period, the Candidate submits his/her application for admission to the Association of Salesian Cooperators. It must be approved by both the Local and Provincial Councils. The induction usually takes place at Mass during which the Candidate makes his/her promise in the presence of God, before the Salesian Family, and the entire Church. The Promise follows: Father, I adore you because you are good and love everyone. I thank you for having created and redeemed me, for having called me into your Church, and for having brought me in it to the knowledge of the apostolic Family of Don Bosco, which lives for you in the service of the young and poor. Drawn by your merciful love I want to love you in return by doing good. And so, after due preparation, I, (name), PROMISE to commit myself to live the evangelical Project of the Association of the Salesian Cooperators, -by being a faithful disciple of Christ in the Catholic Church; -by working in your Kingdom, especially for the advancement and salvation of the young; -by deepening and witnessing to the Salesian spirit; -and by collaborating, in Family communion, in the apostolic initiatives of the local Church. Give me, Father, the strength of your Spirit, that I may be able to remain faithful to this plan of life. Mary Help of Christians, Mother of the Church, help me and guide me. Amen. Membership in the Association of Salesian Cooperators is for life. An individual may be removed from the Association at his/her request or by vote of the Provincial Council after determining that the circumstances of that Cooperator's life are not consistent with Church teachings. Those Salesian Cooperators who, due to age or infirmity, are unable to physically work in an apostolate, are called to be spiritually present with fellow Salesians through prayer and the offering up of their sufferings in union with those of Christ. |
