Reflection A good question for our reflection might be this: How can we know what God thinks? How can we know if we're thinking as God does or as human beings do? To think as God thinks often leads to difficult choices, such as speaking up when something unjust is happening; creating peace in every situation; always telling the truth; offering extra help to others; and forgiving others. Catechist; 9/09; Dotterweich
"He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak. He ordered them not to tell anyone.” Mark 7:37, 36 Jesus observed the needs and hurts of the people of his day and he responded with help and healing. He cured people of their afflictions and obsessions. He did not seek notoriety or accolades. In fact, he tried to prevent and avoid publicity for his generous acts. A simple “Thank you!” is all he expected, but often he did not receive any sign of gratitude. God has graciously and freely given each of us a vast array of gifts. When we share God’s gifts to us with others, do we expect acknowledgment and praise? Do we want our left hand [and everybody else’s hands] to know what our right hand has done? Do we expect and desire applause and rewards? The truly generous person gives until it helps, not until it hurts, and does not seek recognition or reward, except the knowledge that they have done the right thing. The true measure of our generosity is the good that we do for others that no one knows about - except God. Bulletin Bites
Disciples Response: Enclosed in your bulletin is an insert and an envelope for you to mail to the Diocese. Also at the end of Mass a letter was read from Fr. Michael Clark the Administrator of the Diocese of Ownesboro. Please before you dismiss this appeal know that last year our parish received $2,000 for the renovation of our classrooms from the monies collected. The money you give stays here in our Diocese and given to those in the most need. No basket was passed around, you are asked to mail your contribution directly to the Diocese. For those of you that are on the Diocese mailing list you would have received an envelope in the mail.
RCIA: Due to the lack of interest we have cancel. There has been some interested in having adult education following the Sunday Mass. We will have more information next week.
Picnic: Holy Family in Lafayette cordately invites us to their annual picnic to be held at their rectory beginning at noon this Saturday the 19th. See Father Holly for directions.
Stewardship ~ Did you remember to bring your 2009 - 2010 Stewardship survey? We need each member of your family from 8 years and up to take the time and please fill it out and return them. If you were not here the last two Sunday's your survey is located on the table in the narthex and if you lost yours we do have plenty of extras. Questions please see Diane Beeckler.
Choir: There is a sign-up sheet for choir for the Christmas season on the bulletin board in the old fellowship hall. Rehearsals will begin in the middle of October.
Mexican Fiesta will be Oct. 24th and lots of help is needed. Please see the sign-up sheet also in the old fellowship hall.
Cleaning: The first Saturday of each month we do a thorough cleaning of the church, narthex, bathrooms etc. Each month the numbers have been dropping to help. If you cannot be here on that day but would be willing to come over and help please see Catherine and she will arrange to let you in. Also now that religious education has begun we would like to have someone to come over once a month and vacuum the classrooms and empty the trash (the teachers have enough to do). This does not have to be every month it could be just one time and you could make it a family affair and agree to do it for the month of September.
Come to Kentucky's Little Holy Land: There has been some interested in attending a bus trip to the Bardstown area on Thursday, Oct. 8th where we will take a tour guide to Gethesmane, St. Thomas church, Nazareth convent and St. Joseph Proto Cathedral. Lunch will be in the famous Wickland house and museum. See Carol if interested.
Religious and Craft Items ~ Located in the old Fellowship hall. Please see Ann Stuller or Beth Gripp.
Recycling ~ Please bring your aluminum cans in a box or plastic bag and place it under the ramp of the “old church”. All monies go towards our church debt.
Recylcling Part 2 ~ Recycle your old cell phones and your good deed helps lift women and families out of poverty, and helps provide solutions for climate change; a simple act, a world of good. Please bring in your old cell phones and drop them in the marked box in the new fellowship hall.
Coffee Can ~ Don’t forget donations to help offset the cost of cups, forks, creamer, etc. It is located next to the coffee pot.
.
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want." (Psalm 23:1) Modern
advertisers' in newspapers, magazines, billboards, radio,
television, and the internet use every image and device, no matter
how inappropriate or deceptive, to entice us to want everything. It
is amazing how many people are persuaded to buy the newest fashion
in clothes no matter how atrocious; the most expensive car, despite
a cheaper model is of equal quality; and so much more whether we
need it or not. Yet a disciple of Jesus Christ that is a good
steward who recognizes the difference between what one wants and
what one needs. If we wait to give to God until we have all we
want, we will never give to God. We will always want something
else. And we will never know the truth and beauty of the words of
Psalm 23: "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want." And that
would be sad. Bulletin Bites
Yard and Bake sale will be August 7th and 8th . As you are getting
the children ready for back to school it is a good time to clean out
your closets, garage and kitchen cabinets. We will take clothes but

.“Why are you so terrified? Do you not have faith?” Mark 4:35-41 Before Jesus got into a boat to cross from one side of the Sea of Galilee to the other, the disciples had witnessed him restore Simon’s mother-in-law to health, cure the man with the withered hand, drive out demons, cleanse lepers, and forgive the paralyzed man and tell him to “rise, pick up your mat and walk.” There other signs and wonders to follow, but certainly these should have been sufficient for his disciples to have great faith in him. However, they seem to have no faith in Jesus when they were caught in a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee and feared for their own lives. Are we much different? Do we believe that God works miracles in the lives of others, and sometimes travel thousands of miles to visit the site where we believe such miracles have occurred, but overlook the miracle of his love for us evident in all that we have and all that we are and all that we ever will be? Could Jesus be asking us, “Do you not have faith?” Bulletin Bites
Peter’s Pence Collection: Today we recall the apostolic journey of Pope Benedict XVI to the United States and his call to us to cast the light of Christ upon the world. We can show our solidarity with the Holy Father and our suffering brothers and sisters abroad through our support of this week’s Collection. These funds allow him to provide emergency assistance to victims of war, disaster, oppression, and disease.
Happy Father’s Day: At 4 years: My daddy can do anything; 7 years: my dad knows a lot, whole lot; 8 years, my father doesn’t know quite everything; 12 years: Oh, well, naturally Father doesn’t know that, either; 14 years: Father? Hopelessly old-fashioned; 21 years: Oh, that man is out—of-date. What did you expect?; 25 years: he knows a little bit about it, but not much; 30 years: Maybe we ought to find out what Dad thinks; 35 years: A little patience. Let’s get Dad’s assessment before we do anything; 50 years: I wonder what Dad would have thought about that. He was pretty smart; 60 years: My dad knew absolutely everything; and at 65 years: I’d give anything if Dad were here so I could talk this over with him. I really miss that man. This little piece appeared in the Danbury, Conn., News-Times and was translated from a Dutch magazine.

Parent/Teacher meeting will be held on Thursday, July 9th at 6:30 PM. Letters were mailed to all parents of children K through 12th grade. If you did not receive one, please see Catherine or Fr. Holly. If you would like to help as a teacher, substitute, aid, you are encourage to attend.
It takes a clear vision and detailed plans to build a program of substance and worth. It takes the families and the whole community to commit to the ongoing process.
John Pfeiffer is currently working on putting up the sheet rock and is up at the church almost every day. See him if you can help in anyway.
This year beach party for the children will again be held out at Tina’s on the creek on Sat. July 18th for all the children and their families. Everyone who came last year had lots of fun. “Then, after singing a hymn, hey went to the Mount of Olives” Mark 14:12-16, 22-26 Thank you! When said sincerely, they are two words that say so much. They acknowledge the existence of someone other than ourselves. They communicate to the other person that we are aware of some act or words that benefit us; some act or words restrained or prevented that might have caused us harm or pain; some act or words of instruction, caution or reprimand that we deserved that have made us a better person.
Thank you! Two words that make others feel accepted and appreciated. Yet, they are two words that are often unspoken; that we presume others know we mean or intend without saying them. That is so sad because they are two words, when spoken, mean so much to the person who hears them and say so much about the person who speaks them. At the Last Supper Jesus left us a Memorial of His Love for us. He blessed bread and wine and said Thank you! He gave the disciples, and us, His Body and Blood as a New Covenant. He taught us to say Thank you! to God for all He has given to us and to all who love us as He did. Thank you for reading and reflecting on these words. Bulletin Bites

“Receive the Holy Spirit” John 20:19-23 Seven weeks ago we celebrated the Joy of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. We recalled the tremendous love of God to create us, to give us all that we have, the intelligence to discern God’s will for us and the free will to choose to do his will. We celebrated the sacrifice and passion of Jesus for us. We gathered with family and friends that we may not have seen since Christmas and some of us had a special meal at home or at a fine restaurant. We ate foods and consumed drinks we had given up for Lent. Since Easter we learned of the disciples efforts to understand what they had seen and heard. On Pentecost Sunday they accepted the “Peace of Christ” and “the Advocate, the Holy Spirit” and stepped out into the streets of Jerusalem to boldly proclaim their faith in Jesus as Messiah and Lord and then demonstrated their faith by imitating Jesus. Do we boldly proclaim Jesus as Messiah and Lord where we live by the way we live? Bulletin Bites
BBQ & Auction is this Saturday. Much help is needed throughout the day. Please check the time schedule in the hall.
If you have not yet brought in something for the auction Catherine will be in on Wed. and Thurs but the items will not be able to be listed in the book unless you see Catherine today.
Don’t forget desserts and drinks. See Martha (chair), Mike, or Bob if you have any questions.
We have finished yet another school year and everyone is busy with vacations, ball games etc. but we need you to mark two dates coming up in July.
July 9th there will be a Parent & Teacher meeting for planning the new school year. This meeting is for parents who will have children who will be entering in K through 12th grade and anyone who will be willing to help in the upcoming year. We have at least one opening for a teacher as Deanese Harkins will not be able to teach due to conflict in her schedule. This is especially important for anyone who has a child that needs preparation for their 1st Holy Communion or Confirmation. There will be a letter going out to all parents explaining the importance of this meeting.
As always we know someone will not be able to make it because they maybe out of town and we will work with you on a one on one but please make every effort to attend.
This year beach party for the children will again be held out at Tina’s on the creek on Sat. July 18th for all the children and their families. Everyone who came last year had a lots of fun. We hope you can make it this year. Hot dogs, chips, drinks and all the water you like will be provided.
Pop, Daddy, Poe, Poppy, or Granddad ~ no matter the name he goes by on June 17th we have an opportunity to remember him in a special way. There is an offertory envelope in your box to have him remember at Mass for living or decease. All proceeds will help offset the cost of flowers, altar candles etc. used throughout the year.
Vacation: I will be on vacation from June 10th to 17th to see our new grandson in Oklahoma.

February 20, 2005 - 2nd Sunday of Lent
Valentine Greetings and Love received from St. Bernard’s Parishioners via Barbara Herzog (contact person).
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
" During Lent we tend to focus on repentance, fasting, prayer, and almsgiving. We speak about bearing our cross or putting to death our human sinfulness. But like Peter, James, and John, who saw Jesus’ glory before they experienced the cross, we also need to have our eyes lifted to heaven to see the glory of the risen Jesus, transformed in victory.
Through his transfiguration, Jesus wants to give us a glimpse of our own future transfiguration, when we will live with him in glory no longer weighed down by sin but lifted up by the Spirit."-from The Word Among Us- Daily Meditations for Lent 2005

Action, Abilities and Abundance: As you walked into church today you could not help but notice the beautiful cross and crown made by Jack and Diane Beeckler. There abilities are the envy of us all but we all have abilities that contribute to the growth and appearance of Christ the King. There are those who lead us in music every Sunday, set up for Mass, clean up after Sunday Mass, serve on council, vacuum the floors, raked the acorns and picked up the tree branches on the front lawn, trim the bushes and mow the lawn, bring refreshments on Sunday, those that teach our children every Sunday in Religious Education. The list is never ending. Every one of these abilities and actions are greatly appreciated. Thank you EVERYONE!
As we come to the final two weeks of Lent let us reflect on our actions, abilities and abundance. Are we using all that God gave us?
Cleaning: We now have twice the space but with that comes’ twice the cleaning. Next Saturday beginning at 11:00 AM we will again give the new building a good cleaning (1st Saturday of each month) and your help is needed. Please join us. Also before you leave on Sunday look around to see if you can wipe the tables, clean the coffee pot or just check the bathrooms—every little bit helps.

Get rid of your excess baggage. As human beings, we have all committed sins. We have a little storehouse of things we’ve done or failed to do that we feel ashamed of. And that weighs on us. We drag these secrets around like overstuffed luggage. The more this excess baggage piles up, the less freedom we have to move in the world. Our capacity for moral action is stifled.
When we sin, we hurt God, ourselves, and others. And we need to mend all three of these relationships. The sacrament of Reconciliation attends to each of these relationships in a powerful and positive way. Claretian Publ.; Fr. Mark J. Brummel, CMF
This Monday March 23rd, at 7:00 PM Fr. Holly will be here for Lenten Penance Service.
To continue from last week our examination of conscience…Is my career more important than my marriage? Have I allowed material goods to become more important than relationships? Do I truly listen to other points of view? Am I developing the talents God gave me? Am I too proud to say, “I’m sorry”? Do I truly forgive, or do I keep account of my hurts? Do I model the love of God for my children? Those in my care? Have I talked openly about the faults of others –gossip? Do I give God some quality time out of my day? Am I selfish or do I generously share my time, my goods, my gifts? How well do I love? Am I patient? Am I kind? Am I jealous, conceited or proud? Am I irritable?
Spaghetti Dinner: 50/50 ~ $50.00; Ham ~ $53.00; Auction $465.50 and the dinner $1,140.86 (1/2 proceeds from dinner will go to BRASS). There are still a few items that will be return to Sam’s for refund.
Debt Collection is next Sunday.

April 26th Sun. First Holy Communion
The Triduum begins with Holy Thursday (here we will celebrate on Monday, April 6th). We will recall the celebration of the Jewish Passover and the Christian celebration of the Lord’s Supper. During the Gloria we have the ringing of bells. Fr. Holly will wash our feet to remember symbolically his ministry of service as the priesthood of all believers.
At the conclusion of Mass Fr. Holly will place the humeral veil and carry the Eucharist to the place of reposition. The altar will be undressed. Adoration will be held for as long as needed. There will be a sign up sheet next week.
Incense: The purifying fragrance of the church represents virtue. The rising smoke represents the prayers of the congregation rising towards God.
Humeral Veil will be draped over Father’s shoulders and down the front – hence its name. It is fastened across the breast with clasps or ribbons to prevent from falling. Flags (wings) are provided well under the lower edges to hold the chalice or monstrance.

“Take these out of here and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” John 2, 13-25 Jesus did not live in Jerusalem. He was taken to there as an infant and his family traveled to the city for a Passover when he was a young boy. He visited the city as an adult and celebrated a Passover meal with his friends. He was then arrested, beaten, crucified, died, was buried and rose from the dead in Jerusalem. The Temple in Jerusalem housed the Ark of the Covenant and was considered to be the place where God resided and was to be worshiped. But some had turned the Temple into a for-profit enterprise. Jesus drove them out. As a result of the Incarnation, Birth, Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus, and our own Baptism, we are Temples of the Holy Spirit. How do we treat our Temple? Have we bought in to the “Meism” and “He who dies with the most things wins” mentality of our culture and turned our Temple into a marketplace? Lent is a time to reflect on what we have done with our Temple. When we see Jesus will he approach us with open arms or will he be swinging a handful of cords? Bulletin Bites

Children’s Snacks: We are in the last quarter of Religious Education. Every Sunday the children have come to enjoy their light snacks before Mass after having been here since 9:30. Often the burden has fallen on a few to supply Sippy drinks, fruit/jell-o/pudding cups etc. So in fairness we are asking all the parents of children to bring something next week to finish out the weeks ahead. If you have any question please see your child/ren’s teacher.
Refreshments after Mass: Because of the increase number of attendance we are asking for three to bring refreshments after Mass. Please check the revised list!
Stations of the Cross: every Wednesday following 8:00 AM Mass, and on Sunday’s beginning at 10:15 (before the 11:00 AM Mass) during Lent. ALL are welcome.
Spaghetti Dinner: Thank you one and all!! Your Action’s, Abilities and Abundance are greatly appreciated. I will have final figures next week.
Parish Council: Lee Jansen has stepped down from our Parish Council and we currently have an opening. At this Tuesday meeting names will be suggested and you maybe called upon. Thank you Lee for your time on the council, this past year.
Monday March 23rd, at 7:00 PM Fr. Holly will be here for Lenten Penance Service. Why do we need the Sacrament of Reconciliation? The Lord instituted a special Sacrament of Reconciliation for the pardon of sins committed after baptism (John20:21-23) and the Church has faithfully celebrated the sacrament throughout the centuries—in varying ways, but retaining its essential elements.
To continue from last week our examination of conscience…Do I seek opportunities to give witness to my faith and bring Christ to others? Do I show reverence to the holy or have I let cynicism and disrespect affect my attitudes and values? Do I participate in the liturgy on Sundays and holy days? Do I respect my body or do I abuse it through improper use of drugs, alcohol, sex, or lack of exercise and rest? Have I damaged someone’s reputation through malicious speech or gossip?

Mon. April 6th, 7 PM HOLY THURS. (Due to Fr. Holly’s schedule with two parishes in two Diocese this is the only day he is available)

Retreat or Mission: It has been many years since we have had a retreat or mission. Back when Sr. Lene was here we had an Isaiah Mission. We would like to have something this fall but need to put a team together now. If you would be interested please see Bill Woodridge or Fr. Holly.
Prayer of the faithful: It has been noted it is difficult to hear the prayers requested in the new church. A possible solution would be to have a book for you to enter your prayer request before mass and than when the petitions are read from the podium they would be included. We would like your thoughts. See a member of the Parish Council or Fr. Holly.

“This is My Beloved Son, Listen to Him!” Mark 9:2-10 At a wedding feast in Cana the wine was running short. One of the guest, Mary, wife of Joseph the carpenter, felt sorry for the wedding couple and their family. After telling her son Jesus, also a carpenter, “They have no wine!” she tells the servants “Do whatever he tells you!” Amazingly, the jars he told them to fill with water were filled with the finest wine. Some time later, while on the top of a craggy, cone shaped mountain across a lush valley from both Nazareth and Cana, Jesus is with three of his friends when they see him appear quite different and standing with Elijah the great prophet and Moses the great lawgiver. From the clouds they hear a voice proclaim “This is my beloved son, listen to him.” God was telling Peter, James and John, and He is telling us, to get to know Jesus. Learn all you can about him so you can imitate him. Learn about him now so when the opportunity presents itself, you can be like Jesus without hesitation. “Listen to Him!” Do whatever he tells you!” Bulletin Bites

OCP (Oregon Catholic Press) each year gives Parish Grants (this is the publisher of our missal). Back in June 2008 Sue Myer’s sent a two page application requesting funds to help us off set our sound system and for music books and resources for our children’s liturgy.
This week we received a letter to announce that our parish has been awarded a $2,000 grant that
“will help us meet the need you so clearly presented, and support your efforts to enhance your community’s liturgy and music.
Your parish was chosen for this award out of nearly 400 applications from parishes large and small across the United States.”
Thank you Sue for your Time and Talent!
Lent is the primary time for celebrating the Sacrament of Penance, because Lent is the season for baptismal preparation and baptismal renewal. Early Christian teachers called the sacrament “second Baptism,” because it is intended to enable us to start again to live the baptismal life in its fullness. Those who experience the loving mercy of God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation should find themselves standing alongside the newly baptized at Easter filled with great joy at the new life God has given all of us. Catholic Update, 3/02, Mick, Rev. Lawrence E.
On Monday March 23rd, at 7:00 PM Fr. Holly will be here for Lenten Penance Service. Each year we have a Lenten Penance Service and our attendance is usually “poor” with less than ten in attendance. Let’s mark our calendars today and begin an examination of conscience. Confession is not how many times “I lied”. Have I prayed morning and evening; do I share my possessions with the less fortunate; do I look down on my neighbor, especially the poor, the sick, the elderly, and people of other creeds and cultures? Am I concerned for the good and prosperity of the human community in which I life? Do I thank God for the good things in my life?
In our world that is crushed with noise—televisions, phones, iPods, radios, traffic machinery, household appliances, conversation—we sometimes need to choose quiet. The desert of Lent can be a quiet place where we “listen to him,” where we hear Jesus teach us about sacrifice and love, where we hear Jesus promise us eternal life, where we hear Jesus whisper of his love for us.
We are now in the 2nd week of our Lenten desert, we hear God’s voice in today’s Gospel. We hear a command that can make a difference every day of our lives. God says, “Listen to him.” Catechist, 3/09 Dotterweich

“The Kingdom of God is at Hand. Repent, and Believe in the Gospel.” Mark 1:12-15 St. Mark tells us that the Spirit drove Jesus into the desert. But what desert? It could have been the Negev Desert south of Jerusalem or the desert east of the Dead Sea [in modern day Jordan]. In either desert food and water would have been scarce and there was the constant danger of wild animals, poisonous snakes and creepy crawly critters. In the desert Jesus had the joy of solitude to be alone with God. We live in a culture that does not value silence and solitude to listen for God to speak his will for us. Are we reluctant to be alone with God because we fear what he might ask of us. Lent is a good time to ask God for the gift of solitude and to make time for periods of silence so we can be with our God. We will learn that solitude is a beautiful gift so we can listen to the Giver. When Jesus learned that John the Baptist had been arrested, he understood it was time for him to proclaim the Kingdom of God. If we make time for solitude, God may tell us to proclaim the Kingdom of God. “Be still and know I am your God.” Bulletin Bites

Lent and Christian initiation are closely associated historically and liturgically. We cannot understand Lent without reference to the Sacraments of Initiation.
During Lent, the elect—those catechumens who will be initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil—prepare to celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist for the first time. Lent is their 40-day retreat before Baptism. Catholic Update 2/98 Richstatter
Today Derek Doig will be in Owensboro to be presented to the Diocesan Administrator, Fr. Mike Clark as a catechumen. Also Col. James and Rosalie Barnard are candidates and will be presented. Please keep them and all catechumens and candidates in your Lenten prayers.
The initiation of adults is for the life of the whole Church, not just for converts. The presence of catechumens journeying toward initial conversion in our parishes models for us the deeper conversion to which we are all called. Conversion, after all is not a-once-in-a-lifetime thing. We all experience God’s call to turn around, change our lives and improve our relationship with the Lord—especially during Lent. “Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven!’ or ‘Rise and walk!’?” Mark 2:1-12 Jesus returned to Capernaum and a crowd gathered around the house where he was preaching. Friends of a paralytic who could not get through the crowd, so they made an opening in the roof [probably a permanent opening to let out smoke from the open fires and to let in light, covered with thatch when not in use] and lowered him down. The paralytic and his friends obviously believed Jesus to heal him. Jesus said, “Child, your sins are forgiven.” Jesus knew his words caused concern among the Jewish leaders who heard him. He asked, “Which is easier, to say ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say ‘Rise, pick up your mat and walk.’” So he tells you paralytic to “Rise, pick up your mat and walk,” And he did just that. Our sin often paralyzes us from being all that God created us to be; from doing all that he gave us the ability to do; from giving all that we can give. Jesus wants to forgive us of our sin and heal us of our paralysis and make us whole. If we have faith like the paralytic and ask for forgiveness, we will be forgiven and healed. Bulletin Bites

Praying the Stations of the Cross ~ also known as the Way of the Cross ~ began in Jerusalem, with Christian pilgrims tracing the spots linked with the Passion and Death of Jesus. When travel to the Holy Land became difficult, churches began including fourteen stations on their walls where the faithful could make the “stations of the cross” spiritually. The devotion is intended to help Christ’s followers join their own sufferings to His. Our Sunday Visitor, 2006
We will have the Stations every Wednesday during Lent following the 8:00 Mass and on Sunday at 10:15.

“I do will it. Be made clean.” Mark 1:40-45 Leprosy was the most socially abhorrent condition a person could have in the time of Jesus. A leper had to live outside of the city and could not engage in normal social life with their family or friends, or anyone else. They lived on the scraps people literally threw to them, or at them, and had to carry a bell to announce their presence as they moved about so people could avoid them. There was no known cure or hope of relief from a degrading existence and the slow and painful death. One such leper approached Jesus, knelt down and said “If you wish, you can make me clean.” What an incredible act of faith! Jesus does not run away from or repel the leper. He recognizes a great act of faith and he has great faith in the leper, the faith that heals. The leper was healed by faith - his faith in Jesus. Jesus wants us to have faith in him - the faith that heals whatever is keeping us from a greater relationship with God by imitating Jesus. Do we have a faith like the leper to ask Jesus to heal us? Ash Wednesday liturgies are some of the best attended in the entire year. Ashes are an ancient symbol of repentance. They also remind us of our mortality and thus of the day when we will stand before God and be judged. This can be linked easily to the death and resurrection motif of Baptism. To prepare well for the day we die, we must die now to sin and rise to new life in Christ. Being marked with ashes at the beginning of Lent indicates our recognition of the need for deeper conversion of our lives during this season of renewal. Catholic Update, 3/02/; Mick, Rev. Lawrence.

Dear God, each year I enter this holy season of lent with good intentions of disciplined practices that will help me know a deeper and more intimate relation with you. Ash Wednesday will be upon us soon, and I will put aside revelry and begin the deliberate trek through this desert time. Now begins the business of honing my mind and heart to be aware of you in my daily life and to encounter you not as the infant in the manger but as the adult Jesus who is my Lord and Savior. Fill me Lord, with attentiveness as I pray my way through this Lenten season. Catechist, Feb. ’08; Long, Kim

Pride, Greed, Lust….. In the late Fourth Century Evagrius Ponticus, a Christian monk, refined a prevailing list of eight patterns of evil: Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sadness, Acedia, Anger, Vainglory, and Pride. In the Sixth Century Pope Gregory revised the list to form the more commonly known list of Seven Deadly Sins: Pride, Greed, Lust/Extravagance, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath/Anger, and Sloth (a combination of Complacency and Apathy). Whatever they are called, they all tempt us to sin against the unconditional love and generous gifts of God. They are the demons in our life that turn us away from God and turn us into our own selfish world. These are some of the demons Jesus came to drive out of the people of his time and that he hopes we can drive out of our lives today by getting to know him better and by imitating him more closely. Imagine life without Pride, Greed, Lust/Extravagance Envy, Gluttony, Wrath/Anger, and Sloth - in us and in others. Bulletin Bites

“You are my beloved Son; with whom I am well pleased.” Luke 3:15-16, 21-22 We heard of the Baptism of the Lord by John from the Gospel of Mark on the Second Sunday of Advent and again on the Third Sunday of Advent from the Gospel of John. Today we have the story of that baptism event from St. Luke. This was clearly an important event in the life of Jesus and the salvation history of mankind. The humble submission of Jesus to John’s public baptism by water, understood as an act of repentance and reform, made that event very important to the men who were writing the Gospels many years after the Death and Resurrection of Jesus. The humility of the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity is an example for us. Are we humble like Jesus? Are we willing to repent and reform for the times we fail to acknowledge that everything we have and everything we ever will be is a gift from God that He wants us to use for our own benefit and the benefit of others? Can we be humble like Jesus, particularly in difficulty times? Bulletin Bites

God created us spirit and body. We require concrete signs and symbols—that our physical senses can grasp—to prepare us for encounters with our Creator. Our wise and loving Jesus gave us sacraments that we might know and experience the grace and presence of God. The sacraments engage our senses and, in that way, help us experience that which is invisible, beyond our senses. People of all ages, but especially children, need signs and symbols to understand and celebrate invisible realities of soul, mind, and heart. Catechist, Heiberg, Jan. ‘07
Today is solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord, we also celebrate the gift of our own baptism. Why not take out your Baptism certificates and photos as a family and talk about your Baptism and your children/s. Who is yours/theirs Godparent. Who came on this special day (Grandparents, family members, church family, etc). Light a candle and maybe place a bowl of water along side and place it on a white cloth (if you still have your baptismal candle and bib use these) and talk about the symbols.

“Magi came from the east. They prostrated themselves and did him homage” Matthew 2:1-12 An epiphany is the sudden realization or comprehension of the essence or meaning of something. The magi came from the east [probably present day Iran] to search for a newly born child that they believed would be the Messiah promised to the Israelites. They obviously had read the Torah and the prophets. They understood the essence or the meaning of the signs in the skies. They made a very arduous and dangerous trip through a hostile desert just to see the child; to prostrate themselves and pay him homage and give him valuable gifts. The child that they saw we now believe is Jesus, Son of Mary, who lived, died, and rose from the dead for our salvation and to give us an example of how to live in relation to our God. How far are we willing to travel to pay homage to Jesus? What inconveniences, difficulties and risk are we willing to endure to demonstrate our faith in Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. The magi were truly “wise men.” Are we equally wise People of God? Have we had our own epiphany? Bulletin Bites

Here is a chance for Catholics and their legislators coming together in dialogue. Please see Catherine for registration form.
The infant Jesus, whose birth we just celebrated, is the One whom heaven and earth are rejoicing over and yet we have taken down our trees and outside lights. We are glad to have all the parties, Christmas concerts behind us. We are 4 days into the New Year and looking at getting things organize. Maybe taken off a few pounds and thinking about taxes but….
As you stand on the cusp of a new year, why not ask God to give you the gift of praise? Why not resolve this year to explore what it means to join creation in worshipping the Lord. Maybe you can try reading a different psalm aloud slowly every day, letting the words fill your heart. Or take time each day to recall the blessings you’ve received. Or take a moment to see the beauty in the world around you. May this be a year of blessing for all of us, as we join the chorus of praise that is welling up around us! The Word Among Us, Advent ‘08

“Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace. . . ” Luke 2:22-40
How was your Christmas? Did you get what you wanted? Was everybody happy with the gifts you gave them? Have you returned all of the presents you received that you did not want or do not fit? Did you spend some time with Jesus? Do we realize and appreciate his role and importance in our lives? Do we understand that a constantly growing intimate relationship with Jesus is a tremendous gift? St. Luke tells us about Simeon, a righteous and devout man who awaited the consolation of Israel. Eight days after the first Christmas, the Birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary brought him to the Temple to perform the custom of the law. Simeon sees Jesus and realizes that the Lord had fulfilled his promise not to let him see death until he had seen Christ the Lord. Simeon had received a tremendous gift. The gift of awareness of who and what Jesus is in our lives and a constantly growing intimate relationship with him is the real gift of Christmas. It is a gift we should cherish and share with others.

New Years Day is the Feast of Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God. Mass is at 1l:00 AM. This day is set aside for Catholics to honor Mary’s generosity—her total gift of self to God and the People of God. When told by the angel Gabriel that God wanted her to be the mother of his only son, Mary’s response was simple and immediate: “I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” Luke 2:38.
This year instead of making a New Year’s resolution, why not make a “Mary Resolution”. What will you do to best follow Mary’s generous example and response to God in practical ways in your daily lives?

“Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. ” Luke 1:26-38 If you add up all of the words spoken by Mary to the Angel at the Annunciation [30], to Elizabeth at their meeting [122 in the Magnificat], and her comments to Jesus and instructions to the servants at the wedding feast at Cana [9], she speaks a total of 161 words in all of Scripture. Mary was a woman of few words, at least according to the record. From expressing her lack of understanding about how God would accomplish what the angel announced to her, to her simple, “May it be done unto me according to your word” and her awareness that “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord” to her final instructions to the servants at Cana, “Do whatever he tells you.” Mary is both our Mother and our Model. As Christmas gets nearer we should all be growing stronger in our willingness to accept the challenges God has in store for us with a simple “May it be done unto me according to your word” so our soul will “proclaim the greatness of our Lord” and we will be ready, without hesitation to “Do whatever he tells you.” Now, let us celebrate Christmas. New Years Day Mass will be at 11:00 AM ~ Holy Day
Open House: Sun., Jan. 4th 2009 from 2 to 4 beginning with prayers service. The King’s Angels have planned the refreshments but we need your help! A sign up sheet with the list of food (cookies and punch) is on the bulletin board, next to the kitchen in our fellowship area. But most of all we need you to be here to greet our visitors.
Cleaning: We now have three times the space to maintain. If you would be willing to help with the upkeep it would be gratefully appreciated. This can be cleaning the bathrooms, checking if the paper supply is adequate, empting the trash, vacuuming the rugs in entry, washing the finger prints off the entry doors, or putting the missals back in place after Mass. Questions please see Catherine or Nancy C.
Ice/Snow Removal: In case of inclement weather help will be needed to remove snow and put down sand for ice before Mass on Sunday’s. If it is just putting down sand only one person will be needed but if there is snow it would be nice if we could have 2 or 3 persons with good backs to remove snow from the walks and to put down sand. You would need to arrive at least an hour before. Please see Bill Wooldridge or Mike Kiene if you can help.
2009 Offertory Envelopes are in and over on the table in the fellowship hall. Please be sure to pick up yours today. Thank you. Also if you have questions about your offerings thus far for 2008, please see me ~ Catherine
Coffee Can: Don’t forget donations to help offset the cost of cups, forks, creamer etc. It is located next to coffee pot.
Aluminum cans: Don’t forget to save those cans! Ask your co-workers and friends if they would help. They do add up!
Christmas parties, special family meals, or quiet evenings around the tree all present golden opportunities for families to retell or rediscover their own heritage of story's. As parents, we are the keepers of a treasure trove that we can share during moments like these.
For us too, story's can be very effective. Without being preachy or dry, they convey wisdom and help our children see how God is at work in their lives. The Word Among Us, Advent ’08; Boughton, Jill A
