ST. AGNES HOME, What we have done - What we do

For over 85 years, St. Agnes Home, Inc. has been helping single mothers and their babies. The original St. Agnes Home, was opened by the Sisters of Mercy on Steele Road in West Hartford in 1914. It served as a maternity home and as a home for children. The first maternity home in Connecticut affiliated with St. Francis Hospital for the provision of medical care in the 70's and moved to it's present site on Mayflower Street in West Hartford in the 80's. Services were expanded to provide support to young women choosing to keep their babies by providing continued residential care at the Center after giving birth. ST. AGNES GOAL To provide a setting in which the single adolescent mother can be supported in making an appropriate plan of care for her baby, to provide supervised residential care and follow-up support services designed to assist the teen mothes in transforming into independent living and to develop the teen mother's ability to advocate for herself and her baby. ADMISSION CAPACITY AND LENGTH OF STAY Adolescents up to age 18 --- infants up to age one at admission. Capacity - 16 adolescents and 16 infants to age 2 years in the Center and extended support to an additional 4 young families. Length of stay - One to two years in the Center and additional supportive services in our Transitional Living Apartment Program. Who we serve: Average # of children served in one year - 60. Average age of teenager served in 2001 -15 Ethnicity: 42% African American 25% Hispanic 29% Caucasian 4% Biracial Average birth weight of infant delivered - 6 lbs. 7 oz. Total number of teens served 2001 - 61 36 Adolescents and 25 babies. The challenging behaviors offered by younger teens without family support requires extensive intervention. Supervised parenting education and support, although labor intensive and expensive, can overcome these young mothers early experiences and enable them to become successful independent mothers.
