There are four concerns under Service Commission: Respite, International Concerns, Family Concerns and Community Concerns.

Respite Concerns

Olga Bertozzi, Chair

Respite continues to provide the compassion and support to the homebound and their caregivers in the greater Jacksonville area.  There is an abundance of volunteers available to provide care for caregivers.   Families in need may contact Olga Bertozzi with the Diocese Council of Catholic Women.

Stamps and can tabs were collected for McDonald charity around the world.

Trade-Free chocolate for International projects was supported.

DCCW women are in contact with our legislators to bring forth the awareness of Human Trafficking and also with financial donations.

DCCW representatives were present at the Capitol for the Red Mass.

Farm workers: Wrapped Christmas gifts for the children, including backpacks and school supplies, and also a huge collection of food and diapers were collected for the annual Epiphany party in Live Oak.  At this event, the CCW ladies prepared a meal for parents and children.  Gifts are distributed to all in attendance.  Bicycles and other big ticketed items were raffled off.

Women of Hope:  This project is for the women and children of Afghanistan.  Collected for them were blankets, clothes, heavy jackets, boots, school supplies and money donations.

Support for the following orphanages:

Sor Dominga Bocca Orphanage for Girls in Ecuador, which is a DCCW project, received from DCCW $800.00 for Christmas for the girls along with 2 bags of Avon products.  The donation and items were taken to the orphanage by Jacksonville University students.

Other orphanages supported:

Fr. Walsh Orphanage in Jamaica

St. Francis DeSales Orphanage in India

The Servant Sisters of the Home in Ecuador

Family Concerns

Mary George, Chair

The Anniversary Mass was held in November 2010 in Gainesville for those couples in the Diocese who are celebrating at least 25 years of marriage.  A multitude of food baskets were distributed to needy families for Thanksgiving and Christmas by many parishes along with their St. Vincent DePaul affiliations.  There were numerous parish picnics throughout the Diocese during the year.  Mother’s Day cards are sold each year in support of Born-Free to fight abortions.

Community Concerns

Debra Capley and Mary Hartman, co-chairs

Our 29th Annual Camp I Am Special Fashion Show and Luncheon entitled “Showers of Flowers” was held on March 5, 2011 at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in the Parish Center thanks to Father Luke McLoughlin and the staff at St. Matthew’s.  It was a very successful event, attended by over 160 ladies and gentlemen.  Lunch was provided by the Italian American Club again this year.  Each of the six models, assisted by her very own escort, modeled two spring-time fashions provided by the Dress Barn at the St. Johns Towne Center.  Fun was had by all.  We look forward to this very special event again next year for more lovely fashions and lots of fun.
