St. Charles Borromeo Parish at 1818 Coal Pl SE, Albuquerque, NM 87106 US - Young Adults

Young Adults

Young Adult ministry July 2008

Young Adult ministry is comprised of young adults ages 18 to 35yrs. Many of you already practice young adult ministry by lecturing, being an extraordinary Eucharistic minister, and helping in many other parish ministries.  This is a wonderful launch pad for what we plan to do here at St. Charles Borromeo.

The month of July will be the “kick off” month for the different young adult groups that the young adult advisory team will be starting this year. These groups will just be starter groups to see what kind of response we will get from you, the young adults of the parish.  We will introduce the “YAG” groups. YAG stands for Young Adult Group but is special in that these groups are mainly social, including singles, married, and parents; and will be categorized into three groups: YAG college (which has been meeting since Feb. 07), YAG 20’s-30’s and YAG 30’s +.

We would also like to get a parent support group started for single and married parents, an engaged and married support group and by popular demand, a Catholic singles group.

This is a big step but our goal is to have four regularly meeting groups out of those mentioned above by this Christmas. The descriptions and schedule for the kick off meetings in the month of July is as follows:

v      YAG College will meet every first and third Monday of the month (July 7 & 21) at 7:00pm. This social group is meant to provide a safe place to study, support and make friends with other young adults who are attending school. We will be fundraising for trips and outings. Bring $5.00 for dinner.

v      YAG 20’s - 30’s will meet every first Tuesday of the month (July 8) from 6:30 to 8pm. This social group is meant to allow young adults, single or married, ages 20 to 30 to meet and interact with other young adults these ages. The group will decide where to have their gatherings i.e. the young adult building, a restaurant or special event. We will be fundraising for trips and outings.  Bring money for dinner.

v      YAG 30’s+ will meet every last Thursday of the month (July 31) from 6:30 to 8pm. This social group is meant to allow young adults, single or married ages 30+ to meet and interact with other young adults in this age range. The group will decide where to have their gatherings i.e. the young adult building, a restaurant or special event. We will be fundraising for trips and outings.  Bring money for dinner

v      Parent support group will meet every last Friday of the month (July 25) at 6 to 7:30pm. This group will provide support via prayer, shared information and experiences for parents with children of all ages from other parents. Both married and single parents are encouraged to come and your children are welcome. We will also be looking into a monthly parent date night where your children will be watched at the parish while you enjoy a night out. Please bring money for dinner.

v      Engaged and Married Support Group will meet every last Tuesday of the month (July 29) from 6:30 to 8:00pm. This group will find support with Natural Family Planning through the Couple to Couple League and share stories and experiences between couples. We will link up with the Engaged and Marriage Encounter to enable couples to attend retreats and sharing circles. Please bring money for dinner.

v      Catholic Singles Group will be the most anticipated young adult group to be started at St. Charles. This group will fundraise to attend the annual National Catholic Singles Conference. The group will also have a bi-annual “Catholic Speed Dating Night” where people can get to know each other in a fast paced, non abrasive, Catholic setting. The night will be followed up with a pot luck the next month. The first event will take place on Saturday July 26 at 7:00pm. This event will also double as a fundraiser so be sure to buy a ticket for $15.00 by Monday July 21. Dinner will be provided. Call Alexis Anaya for tickets.

v      Young Adult Advisory Team will be comprised of a young adult representative from each group.  These young adults will be meeting on the first Sunday of every month (July 6) after the 5:00pm mass to discuss the plans for the month. To qualify for this group you must be willing to take charge and be comfortable in a leadership role, you must be willing to help organize events for the group(s) you attend, you must be willing to attend workshops pertaining to young adult ministry and you must be able to work with other young adults in a shared vision to bring this ministry and all its possibilities to St. Charles.

v      The Adoptee Program is not a group but a program that will allow college students not native to Albuquerque to be “adopted” by a parish family. The goal of the program is to provide the student with occasional home cooked meals, sponsorship for some of the YAG outings and develop a relationship with the family. If you are interested in the Adoptee Program, either as a family or student please leave your name with the front office.

v      LITE- Life in the Eucharist

v      What is in the works:

*The Young Adult Building is almost complete and ready for action! (BIG accomplishment for us)

*Some of the members of the advisory team are working on a poster for Bernadette Jaramillo that will be distributed to attract young adults.

*The YAG fundraising contest is still going on and is open to all parishioners. See our web page at www.myspace.com/stcharlesyag and click on CONTEST.

*Our young adult group will be represented at the Young Adult Symposium on August 8, 2008. We are aiming to have at least four representatives.

*Some of our young adults are participating in Life in the Eucharist

What we need from you, the young adult:

Confirmation- that you will attend or at least are interested in this ministry and its programs

Attendance- we can’t hold a meeting without any people

Patience- it will take time to get this ministry off the ground

Love and Prayer- for your young adult brothers and sisters in Christ, so that this needed ministry will help strengthen our parish as a whole
