St. Edward Parish at 216 S, Nichols St., Lowell, IN 46356 US - Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

I (Terri, webmaster) wanted to share this new postcard picture with all of you of the canonization of Mother Theordore Guerin in Rome.  I received it from "Our Sister of Providence" from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, IN.   It really gave me a very warm and close feeling about her Sainthood and now we have our very own Saint to pray to.

Celebrating the Canonization of St. Theodora Guerin ~ On Sunday, December 3rd, Bishop Dale Melczek will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving for the Canonization of St. Theodora Guerin (Mother Theodore Guerin) foundress of the sisters of Providence, at 11 am at St. John the Baptist Church in Whiting.

St. Theodora was canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on October 15th, becoming the eighth American saint and the first saint from the state of Indiana. Thousands of lives in the Diocese of Gary have been touched by St. Theodora and her Sisters of Providence.

The December 3rd celebration is being hosted by Forever Blue and Gold, the alumni association of St. John the Baptist School.

Following the Liturgy, a reception and open house will be held in St. John School. In addition to tours of the school and convent, St. John School and sisters of Providence memorabilia will be on display.

A presentation on the life of Mother Theodore and her canonization will also be shown. Several Sisters of Providence will be attending the celebration.

All are invited to join in this joyful celebration! Those taught by the Sisters of Providence, alumni of St. Mary of the Woods College and graduates of St. John the Baptist School have a way to reconnect with their past.

Name That Saint
Name a Saint that lived in Indiana?
Answer before October 15 - None
Answer after October 15 - Mother Theodore Guerin

Mother Theodore Guerin was born Anne-Thérèse Guerin, Oct. 2, 1798, in the village of Etables in Brittany, France. Her childhood was marked by tragedy. Two of her brothers died at a young age by fire and her father was murdered by bandits. Her mother never fully recovered from her husbands death.

Anne-Thérèse entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruillé, France in 1823 and took her perpetual vows in 1831, receiving the name Theodore. She taught school for several years afterwards.

Answering a call from the Bishop on Vincennes, Sister Thomas was dispatched by her order to the wilds of western Indiana.

Arriving on October 22, 1840 with five companion Sisters, the stage coach dropped them in the middle of a forest - no town, no neighbors, nothing but a very primitive cabin/church constructed by the Catholic residents in
preparation for the Sisters arrival.

Not being one to waste time, Mother Theodore soon began an academy for girls, taking in the first student on July 4, 1841. This academy continued to grow and flourish and is today known as St. Mary of the Woods College - the country 's oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women.

The Sisters of Providence ministered not just to the local community but soon throughout the country as their reputation as educators grew.

Mother Theodore Guerin died on May 14, 1856, leaving a legacy that today includes 465 Sisters and 5 novices.

Mother Theodore Guerin was given the title “Venerable” in 1992 and “Blessed” in 1998.
