COME & SEE! The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) might be what you are looking for if: ...You were never baptized ...You were baptized in another religious tradition ...You were baptized a Roman Catholic but have not received the other sacraments We are starting an Inquiry class for those who are interested in learning something about the Roman Catholic Church...about Catholic beliefs and traditions...and about how to live by that faith. We want to share our faith story with you if you are interested, call Sr. Alexis, D.W. at 941-4141.
R.C.I.A. Over the past nine years St. James has received over 100 requests from adults desiring admission to the Church or the sacraments of initiation. These inquirers become part of a group on faith journey involving prayer, study and reflection. Basic to the success of the program are the members of the support team who spend time with the group. Some of these volunteers come every week; some for a special presentation they would like to offer; some are on call as mentors; some come to offer companionship. Some, like myself, come because they receive a deeper insight and awareness of the uniqueness and depth of each different faith journey. The volunteers are a visible sign of the desire of the people of St. James to pass the faith on seriously, and that the prayers and support of the faith community are an essential part of this continuity.
St. Vincent de Paul Society Parish-based volunteers who respond to emergency situations within parish perimeters, offering short-term help for basic needs.
Shalom Initiative A partnership of clergy involving thirteen faith communities in the Greater Port Jefferson area. Their desire is to share time, talent, and funding to attempt to move people beyond what hinders them financially and socially. Shalom needs volunteers for computer training, English as a second language, "rides" for people to social service meetings, literacy trainers, job and job interview trainers, and financial contributors. Those who wish to get more information about the RCIA, St. Vincent de Paul, Shalom Initiative as well as those who wish to volunteer in these ministries, please contact Sr. Alexis at the rectory (631-941-4141).
