St. James R. C. Church at 429 Route 25a E, Setauket, NY 11733 US - Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread

"A generous man will himself be blessed." (Proverbs 22:9) During the summer months we are in urgent need of volunteers to help with our Sunday dinners. We need workers from 1:30-2:30 on Sundays in the church basement to help set the tables, and from 3:45-5:00pm to serve dinner and clean up. No advance planning is needed - just come to the basement whenever you can help. Many of our guests are dependent on the bag of groceries, which they are given each week. Because of this, our pantry needs constant replenishment. If you are part of a group looking for a meaningful service project, running a food drive for us would be greatly appreciated. Our pantry is completely empty. Can you help by donating canned goods or toiletries? Donations may be left in the basement kitchen at any time. We are also in urgent need of warm men's winter clothing. We can only accept donations of seasonal clothing in the basement. Please do not leave toys, out-of-season clothing, or household goods in the basement.

What is “OUR DAILY BREAD” Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry? Our Daily Bread is an outreach ministry of St. James Church. Our Soup Kitchen provides a Sunday meal to approximately 150-200 men, women and children each week. We welcome these neighbors as our guests to our community and serve them a much- needed warm meal. Dinner is served at 5:00 pm in the St. James Church basement. Our Food Pantry also provides a grocery bag of canned food for each family to take home. Many of our guests who partake in the Sunday meal are in need of more than just food. Donated clothing is made available to the guests each week. Every effort is made to find furniture and appliances for people with these specific needs. As our resources allow, Our Daily Bread also attempts to assist those who find themselves in crisis situations. Our hope is that lives are made a little easier and brighter because of the assistance that is given and the fellowship that is found at Our Daily Bread. How can you help? 1.Become a volunteer. There are over 50 volunteers who donate their time to making Our Daily Bread a reality. These volunteers are from St. James’ parish and other churches and temples in our community. They are students from our Three Village Schools and students from SUNY. Come join our family of volunteers. 2.Donate Food for the Sunday meal and/or the Food Pantry. Each week food tags are placed on the bulletin boards at the entrances to the church. This food is needed to prepare the next Sunday’s Soup Kitchen meal. Take a tag and return your food donation to the kitchen in the church basement before the following Sunday afternoon. (Please be sure to place food needing refrigeration in the refrigerator or freezer). Food donations for the Food Pantry (non-perishable food items and toiletries) are always needed and can also be brought to the kitchen in the basement anytime during the week. 3.Donated clothing and linens fill a real need that some people have. Your donations can be placed in the white cabinets at the far right-hand corner of the church basement. ) Please be sure all donations are laundered and mended). 4. We make every attempt to find new homes for your “gently used” household items. 5.Monetary assistance is always appreciated. Please make our check payable to “Our Daily Bread” and place it in a separate envelope with “Our Daily Bread” written on the front. This envelope can then be placed in the collection basket during mass or brought to the church office. “If one or your kinsmen in any community is in need in the land which the Lord, your God, has given you, you shall not harden your heart nor close your hand to him in his need. Instead, you shall open your hand to him and freely lend him enough to meet his need.” Deuteronomy 15:7-8
