St. John the Baptist at 4987 State Route 81, Greenville, NY 12083 US - St. John the Baptist: A Brief History
| St. John the Baptist: A Brief History |
A new Roman Catholic Mission was founded in Greenville. On October 2, 1932 the Very Reverend John L. Smith, pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, Catskill and Dean of Greene County, said Mass for the first time in Greenville at Vanderbilt Hall. In 1933 the original St. John the Baptist Church was erected in record time, 47 days. The Most Reverend Edmund F. Gibbons, Bishop of Albany Diocese, dedicated the new building on May 25, 1933. After several years a need for a bigger church arose. So the Diocese gave permission for the old church to be razed and a new bigger church to be built in its place. On November 28, 1965 the groundbreaking ceremony was held. The laying of the corner stone occurred at 12:15 pm Sunday, September 11, 1966. And that in short is how we have the church we know and love today.
