A native of the Washington D.C. area, Timothy Flynn, received his undergraduate degree from George Mason University (Virginia) and his Masters and Ph.D. in musicology from Northwestern University (Illinois). While in Washington, he was assistant organist at St. Stephen Martyr Church (Georgetown), and Choral-Vicar at the Washington National Cathedral (Episcopalian).
After moving to Chicago, where he lived and worked for 12 years, Dr. Flynn served as director of music at Immaculate Conception Parish (Highland Park, IL) where he supervised an extensive music program including a semi-professional choir and concert series. While in Lansing, Tim has served the diocese as Music Director in the Office of Worship and was an instructor of music at Lansing Community College.
In 2002, Tim joined the music faculty at Olivet College where he currently is associate professor of music and chair of the Performing Arts Department. At Olivet, he conducts the choral ensembles, teaches music history, music theory, and interdisciplinary courses in the arts and humanities. Under Dr. Flynn’s leadership, the Olivet Chamber Singers perform regularly throughout Michigan and in Niagara-on-the-Lake and Toronto, ON. As an organist, he has performed recitals and concerts in Rome, Florence, Parish, and the south of France.
Tim is also a published composer of choral and organ music (Morning Star and Augsburg Publishers) and has recently published two scholarly monographs, one on Camill Saint-Saëns and another on Charles François Gounod, both through Routledge, NY.
Dr. Flynn is extremely happy to be joining the staff of St. Mary Cathedral and looks forward with great anticipation to serving as music director.
