St. Mary School of Rockwood at 32447 Church St., Rockwood, MI 48173 US - First Grade

First Grade

To our Kindergartners from last year, welcome to first grade, and to our new students, we’re glad that you’re here at St. Mary’s!   Our classroom is a place where children are able to develop academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually through direct instruction, hands-on learning experiences, group and individual activities and religious education.   The curriculum incorporates the Michigan grade level objectives for first grade, presented in a nurturing environment that acknowledges individual differences and learning styles and promotes a positive school experience for all children.  As the school year progresses, students interact with their teachers and peers, working to become independent learners and acquiring the skills needed for a successful transition to second grade.

Classroom News

We are well into the second quarter and looking forward to all of the activities that November and December bring---the Turkey Trot, St. Nicholas Day, the Christmas program and our classroom Christmas party/Book exchange.  Thank you to all of the parents who served us our “Thanksgiving Feast”—It was nice to have lunch with all the students together and the food was delicious!

We will be going to Henry Ford Community College on Dec. 1st to see a student performance of A Christmas Carol.  Information and permission slips will be coming soon. We need an accurate count of students and chaperones by Tuesday, Nov. 24th so we can make our reservation.

During our Christmas party on December 18, we will have a gift book exchange.  Each student should bring in a gift-wrapped book priced from $3-$5. Books should be appropriate for a boy or girl unless marked on the package.  The December book order will be sent home on Nov. 20th and has lots of great books in this price range, as well as some nice holiday books for gift giving.  Scholastic is also offering a $5 coupon for online orders of $10 or more, and our classroom gets a free book with every order, so please consider ordering online.  (Our classroom code and password are included with the book order flyer.)

1st Grade Religion News
November/December

Students have just received their 1st quarter grades and all did well in Religion class!  We have now completed two units, God is Our Father and Heaven is Our Home, and will begin our third, God Watches Over Everything, soon.  We also took the time to learn about the “Feast of the Guardian Angels,” “All Saints’ Day,” and “All Souls’ Day.”  The students are currently writing down the names of people who have passed in our families into our class notebook for the month of November—please remind them to pray for these intentions in their daily prayers.

Soon, an Advent project will be sent home.  This involves assembling a miniature manger and adding pieces of yellow yarn to it each day when your child completes a good deed.  Near the end of Advent I will send home a baby Jesus to add to the manger for your Christmas celebrations at home.  Please look for a note and baggie containing the pieces you will need closer to the beginning of Advent.

If you have any questions about Religion in 1st grade please do not hesitate to contact me.  My email address is:  taschlerb@catholicweb.com or you can write a note or leave a message in the office.  May you all have a blessed autumn and Advent seasons!

God Bless,

Miss Taschler

Reminders

  • With the colder weather, students need to wear a warm coat, hats and gloves to school.  We go outside for recess every day unless it is raining or the wind chill prohibits doing so.
  • Be sure to continue working on monthly reading logs and submit them at the end of each month.  These count as homework toward your child’s Language Arts grade and fulfill the Book-It requirement.
  • Nightly spelling work is a key component of the F.A.S.T. Reading program. Please check your child’s folder each Monday for the week’s assignments and practice spelling words each night to prepare for Friday’s test.  Studies show that having your child write  the words, rather than reciting them orally, is a more effective way to learn them.
  • Children need a healthy snack each day.  Please send a spoon if needed.
