St. Mary School of Rockwood at 32447 Church St., Rockwood, MI 48173 US - Seventh Grade

Seventh Grade
`

Language Arts classes in Mrs. Otten’s room for grades seven and eight focus on oral and written communication skills. The content is challenging to prepare students for high school, and motivating to foster students’ critical thinking skills. Many students find the work exciting and fun. Virtually any returning St. Mary’s graduate feels he/she was well prepared for high school English. Students practice sharing their classroom work every day through classroom discussions and through special oral research reports. In addition they learn to write and deliver more formal speeches. By the end of the year they have learned to treat the camera as another audience member. Great emphasis is given to all written work. Creative writing skills are practiced. Students focus on learning to write a better than good essay while remembering all they learned about topic sentences, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Research skills and referencing skills are introduced and used in their essays. Various contests are entered throughout the year with very satisfying results. We have had both regional and state winners. Stretching the imagination, putting life experience to work, and solving problems all take place in Mrs. Otten’s classroom where every child is treated with respect and dignity. Students are pushed to do and be their best while they “Pray, Work, Study, Play, and Serve Others in Christ’s Name.

Classroom News

The school year is well underway. The time has literally 'flown by' and it will continue to do so. The junior high students have been very busy reviewing what it takes to be a great writer.  They are honing their writing skills.  They are writing essays and will soon be turning these essays into speeches that they will perfom in front of their classmates.  The year is so full of challenges for your junior high student. Please help him/her be the best steward of his/her God given gifts. Please listen and help your child with memorizations and speeches; he/she needs to practice these assignments at home. Please check below for due dates on major assignments, and ask your child if he/she is prepared with the work on the due dates. I appreciate your help and your student will, hopefully, appreciate your input and guidance. Please continue to pray for us as we 'Pray, Work, Study, Play, and Serve Others in Christ's Name.'

Thank you.

Mrs. Ruth Otten

Student Reading Assessment

SRA is a tried and true way to improve reading skills. SRA stands for Science Research Associates. Students pick a story from the Reading Laboratory Kit. The stories cover a wide range of topics across nine levels of reading difficulty. These sections can be easy or challenging. Each story is two or three pages long and is followed by seven to ten questions that target comprehension and word knowledge. Those questions are then followed by 33 questions that improve vocabulary skills. The stories listed on this webpage can be listened to and enjoyed by clicking on the story title and downloading to a computer or any MP3 player. The original stories are in the SRA box in Mrs. Otten's room. To download, CTRL + Click and "Save Link As.."
