St. Mary School of Rockwood at 32447 Church St., Rockwood, MI 48173 US - Preschool

Preschool

Welcome to St. Mary’s Preschool classroom!  Our room is a very busy place during the morning hours.  The program is offered 5 half days for four-year-olds and 2 half days for three-year-olds—we feel strongly that this helps all students prepare for full day kindergarten!  We also offer a Young 5’s program for students who are “age-eligible” for kindergarten, but are not yet ready.  Because our program is multi-age (where three, four, and five-year-olds are in the same classroom), we have a commitment to work with each child at his/her own level, thereby challenging your child where he/she will grow the most at any given time.

The basis of our curriculum is derived from the “Letter People” program by Abrams Publishing.  Within the context of learning the name, shape, and sound of each letter person, students will study science, social studies, and mathematics as it pertains to the Letter Person’s main theme.  Our math program is also supplemented by Saxon Math for preschoolers.  We use the “I Am Special” program, by Our Sunday Visitor, and Peaceworks programs for our formal religion and conflict resolution.  Gross motor is included during music and movement time in the classroom with activities outside.

We believe in educating the whole child in developmentally appropriate ways, such as introducing writing in lowercase letters when the child demonstrates readiness; assessments for language and articulation of sounds and intervening early, if necessary; using poems, songs, and rhymes to help memorization; fostering critical, creative, and higher order thinking by asking open-ended questions and allowing students to voice their thinking; learning social and life skills that will help make your preschooler more self-sufficient.

If you have any questions about our program, please do not hesitate to email our lead teacher, Mrs. Kathy Gaynier, at gaynierk@comcast.net.

Classroom News

Welcome to 2009-2010 preschool school year.  Mrs. Comorski and I are looking forward to a wonderful school year.  Things have already started with a bang.  We have had 3 letter people join our class.  Mr. N was our first friend.  He loves to make noise!  He led the class in a noisy musical parade around the school.  Ms. W joined in on the fun.  She is all about words and the weather.  The children are taking turns at being the meteorologists in the classroom.  Ms. P has arrived and she talks all about our body parts.  Please reinforce the sounds of each letter at home and ask your child if they can give you any words that may start with the letter person we may be working on.

If there are any questions you have please do not hesitate to ask.  I can talk with you before class or after.  If talking in person is not an option, please send me an email and I will make sure I get back with you.
