St. Mary’s School is located in the city of Rockwood. This city is an older established one dating back to an official deed of land, granted by the French in 1786. For many years, it was a small city that bordered the Huron River. With the coming of Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railroads, Rockwood began to expand. Industry developed and used the river and railroads for shipping products, chiefly baskets, all over the world. In later years, Interstate 75 was constructed which further encouraged expansion and industry. At this time Rockwood is moderately settled and developed, maintaining a small town, rural atmosphere. Some of the vacant land is currently being used to develop single-family subdivisions. Although most of the housing is designated single family, there are some multiple family complexes. As of the last census, the majority of the population seems to make their living in the skilled trades, working for employers such as Mazda, Auto Alliance, US Silica Mining, and the local service industries. The current population growth indicates an increase in professionals. 95% of the population is Caucasian with some slow changes in ethnicity and national origin. The projections for the future of the city, according to the Master Plan of the CIty of Rockwood, call for continued growth in population, industry, and housing. Some of the projected statistics, for the year 2010, have been figured moderately to include: population 4,063 (25% increase) and households 1,653 (45% increase). St. Mary’s School encompasses a residential, suburban area of approximately twenty-six and one half (26 1/2) square miles. Included in this area are the city of Rockwood, Gibraltar, and parts of Brownstown Township, Woodhaven, and Flat Rock. St. Mary’s community draws families from the surrounding school districts of Gibraltar, Airport, Flat Rock, Trenton, Woodhaven, and their respective communities. Our school population is predominately white, middle class. Less than 5% of our student population qualifies for free and reduced lunch. 198 students are enrolled for the 2007-2008 school year in programs from preschool through eighth grade. St. Mary’s School has 12 classrooms, a computer lab, a school hall (used for art, music, physical education classes, and lunch) a kitchen and an administrative office. There are 10 full time teachers, 4 part time teachers, one secretary and the principal.
