St. Michael Parish at 609 East Fifth Ave, Flint, MI 48503 US - Our Church History
| Our Church History |
There has been a St. Michael Parish on the corner of Saginaw Street and Fifth Avenue in Flint since 1844..
It was the Mother Church for Genesee County, and was the only Catholic Church serving the area for 25 years.
The first church was built of finest pine and served the parish for nearly 40 years.
By 1880, Flint had grown to the extent that the first church was inadequate. At that time, the second church was built on the site. Constructed of red brick, the imposing edifice served the parish for 81 years.
The present St. Michael Church, built of mankato stone in 1966, was designed to meet the vision of Vatican Council II, and represents a continuing commitment to ministry in the core city.
St. Michael School once served the educational needs of several generations of Catholics in Genesee County. It now serves as the School of Choice for the Flint Board of Education.
The convent, built for the Sisters, servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, now houses Chatholic Charities of Genesee and Shiawassee counties.
In September 2008, the DIocese of Lansing announced that St. Mary Parish and St. Michael Church are in a cluster, with the possiblity of merger.
