Joining the monastic life for a day of prayer and volcano climbing was a great way to stretch out after a long flight and prepare for the Rachel's Vineyard weekend. She was blessed to stay with Sr. Geralyn Spaulding who used to help with Rachel’s Vineyard when she was stationed at the Benedictine Monastery in Pecos, New Mexico and will now be helping in Hawaii. These first time initiatives on the Island of Oahu were organized by Lisa Shorba, a beautiful and determined woman who received her counseling degree from the University of Steubenville. Lisa learned about Rachel's Vineyard while she was a student at Steubenville. She attended a retreat because she knew she wanted to provide a healing program like this when she returned to her native Hawaii once she became a counselor. Lisa and Fr. Khan traveled to the United States this past July to attend the Leadership Conference where they were inspired and energized to keep planning and moving forward. In record time, they organized a team and became the 48th state to plant Rachel’s Vineyard at Our Lady of Kea’au Retreat Center in Waianae. The retreat center was an open-air facility overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The overflow of retreat participants who did not fit in the cabins pitched tents to camp out under the stars. Fr. Khan The Spiritual Director for the retreat was incredibly gentle and compassionate. His loving presence truly reflected the love and heart of Christ. Following the Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat, Theresa presented a clinical training for mental health professionals, lay people and clergy of the Diocese. The seminar was hosted by The St. Stephen’s Diocesan Center in Honolulu. Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor of Roman Catholic Church in state of Hawaii was delighted with the presentations and the apparent interest in this topic, as many people from throughout the island attended the day long training. One of the participants who had just completed her retreat spontaneously asked if she could share her story at the training – we believe she was the first woman to become Silent No More in Hawaii!   = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Julie Kelly from Rachel's Vineyard Australia Receives Papal Honor By Amanda Miner   Mrs. Julie Kelly, who spread Rachel’s Vineyard throughout Australia was awarded the Papal honor of Dame of the Order of Saint Sylvester for her work and ministry to the Archdiocese of Sydney. Mrs. Kelly has a lifetime of service including 20 years as a State School Catechist, 8 years directing Adult Faith Formation, 12 years directing RCIA in her parish as well as being the RCIA coordinator for the Sydney Archdiocese. Also included in these ministries are Julie’s many years working with Rachel’s Vineyard. “By far the most important and significant ministry of my life has been introducing Rachel’s Vineyard here to Australia after my own life-changing retreat experience in Seattle in February of 2000,” Mrs. Kelly reflected.   Julie has a special connection with Rachel’s Vineyard and felt called to spread the ministry in her home country. “I first knew about Rachel’s Vineyard retreats when I heard about it from a Rachel’s Vineyard priest who was visiting here from Seattle. When he told me about how beautiful the retreats were, I decided then and there to travel to Seattle and find peace and healing for myself, more than 40 years after losing my first conceived child to abortion. After that weekend, I knew I had to bring this beautiful ministry home to Australia and get it started here.”   There are currently 7 Rachel’s Vineyard retreat sites in Australia. Due to Mrs. Kelly’s hard work, Rachel’s Vineyard is now available in every capital city across Australia. The first retreat in Australia was held in Sydney in November of 2000. Julie recently shared humbly, that she couldn’t have done it on her own, “It is and always has been a team effort. The Rachel’s Vineyard team in Sydney has been so blessed with the most amazing, committed, skillful people over these past 10 years. As I retire, they will continue on with every bit as much energy and dedication as we have ever had, taking this beautiful ministry into the second decade of the 21st Century!”    In order to receive the honor of Dame of the Order of Saint Sylvester, one must be nominated. “I had NO idea this was proposed but I understand now that it has been in the pipeline for over 2 years and that 3 people who have served with me in the Rachel’s Vineyard ministry were approached to write a recommendation for me.”   Julie is retiring from Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries in order to spend more time with her husband and grandchildren. Mrs. Kelly will be receiving this Papal honor on November 12th in Sydney. Our prayers and best wishes are with her. I met many of you at the very first RV Training Retreat in Blackwood, NJ in May 2000 and our friendship has deepened over a number of subsequent retreats and training conferences.   Since that NJ conference, Rachel's Vineyard has grown in Australia from our first retreat in Nov. 2000 in Sydney, to now being available in every capital city across Australia and now is spreading to Singapore and Jakarta. It has been a marathon effort and truly a roller-coaster ride -- but so incredibly rewarding for me and for all of the wonderful people who have been involved in this initiative here.   It is time, now, for me to retire and entrust this sacred privilege to the other wonderful members of our local teams. Anita Sonntag provided information about Rachel’s Vineyard Ministries, which provides weekend retreats to those struggling with the emotional and spiritual pain of abortion. She also described the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, which involves women speaking out about the damage that having an abortion has caused in their lives. “These are non-profit organizations run by volunteers, most of whom are post-abortive women who have experienced forgiveness and healing, and I am one of those,” said Sonntag. “It is simply impossible to rip a child from a mother’s womb, without it tearing out a part of the woman herself,” said Sonntag. “Yet pro-abortion groups and our laws, or lack thereof, tell women that it is no big deal, and that it’s our legal right, and many women buy into the belief that anything that is legal is also morally right.” However evidence shows that the majority of women who have abortions do not freely choose to do so, but experience coercion, force or threats; and often feel they have no other choice, she said, likening the situation to an animal caught in a trap that gnaws off its own leg. “Studies show that 70 percent of women who have abortions believe it is morally wrong. They act against their consciences because they feel trapped by the situation,” she said. “At the time it seems like the easy way out and the only way out.” But after the abortion, many women suffer from post-abortion syndrome, which is a type of posttraumatic stress disorder, Sonntag related. “In a process of denial, the woman blocks out the natural grieving process in the death of a child, and often denies responsibility for the abortion. The denial and suppression blocks the healing process and the possibility of forgiveness for herself and others,” she said. The trauma will often manifest itself in a breakdown of function in psychological, physical and spiritual areas, with the pain and guilt sometimes remaining unspoken and unrecognized for many years. Sonntag described her own painful journey after an abortion. “It took me almost 40 years to understand the source of the psychological problems that had plagued me since the time I had the abortion,” she said. “The event was like an abscess eating away at me even when I denied it.” She found God’s forgiveness in the sacrament of reconciliation, but was still plagued with emotional and psychological pain. “It was not until I participated in a Rachel’s Vineyard retreat that I got to the root of what was bothering me.” The weekend retreats are led by a team that includes post-abortive women, professional counselors and priests. Rachel’s Vineyard is open to those of all faiths, Sonntag said. Others suffering from the trauma of abortion – including fathers, grandparents and siblings of aborted babies – are also finding healing through this ministry, she added. “The weekend is a very specific process designed to help the retreat participants experience the mercy and the compassion of God and this is based totally on scripture. It is also an opportunity to surface and release the vestiges of anger, shame, guilt and grief.” She read comments from women who have experienced the retreats. “It is the best thing that ever happened to me. It is totally inspired by God and I am grateful to have been brought so gently from the pain into the light. This is not a human endeavor. Only God can do this,” said one participant. Another said that “the spiritual and psychological healing was immeasurable,” while others commented on how they felt safe to share their experiences and emotions, and never felt judged. Two Rachel’s Vineyard retreats are offered annually in Saskatchewan, one in the spring and one in the fall, Sonntag said. The next one will take place Nov. 6-8 at St. Therese Healing and Growth Centre in Bruno. A related awareness campaign is also drawing attention to the pain and regret women experience after an abortion, Sonntag said. The Silent No More Awareness Campaign involves women who have experienced abortion giving testimony to the damage it has caused in their lives. “Any time we appear in public we carry large signs with the words ‘I regret my abortion,’” said Sonntag. “The purpose for doing this is to counteract the rhetoric that is out there, about how we need abortion, and how a woman has the right to do what she pleases with her own body, and that all women think this is a good thing.” Another goal is to reach out to those who are silently suffering from the devastating psychological, emotional and spiritual effects of an abortion. Silent No More was founded by Georgette Fourney in January 2001 after she witnessed lopsided media coverage of the March on Life in Washington, DC, which gave only 15 seconds of coverage to the march, as opposed to a two-minute piece about a small group of pro-choice women demonstrating at the event. The next year Fourney went to the pro-choice event wearing the large sign proclaiming that she regrets her abortion. Supported by Anglicans for Life and Priests for Life, Silent No More can help turn the tide in the pro-life battle, as post-abortive women speak out about their first-hand experience of the pain and anguish of abortion, said Sonntag, noting John Paul II’s words in his gospel of life encyclical, in which he said that women who have experienced an abortion and have been forgiven and healed, can be among the most eloquent defenders of everyone’s right to life. Sonntag reported on some of the activities that Silent No More has been involved in over the past year, including the March for Life in Regina in May, the March for Life in Ottawa, pro-life conferences, Catholic Women’s Leagues and Knights of Columbus events, and gatherings at universities in Vancouver, Calgary and Saskatoon. A number of other presentations were also part of the annual diocesan Administration Day held at St. Mary’s Parish in Saskatoon, covering such topics as marriage and family life ministry in the diocese, contemplative outreach and centering prayer, Catholic education from kindergarten to university, and vocations. The show will also feature Fr. Victor Salomon. Freddy, Cristina and Fr. Victor will share segments on the 3rd and 4th Saturday of every month. They are requesting ideas for different segments and themes for the program. The broadcast will be in Spanish so all ideas will be translated.
