WESTVILLE FIELD TRIP We had a fabulous time on the September Family Field Trip. The weather was supposed to be bad but we were greeted with sunshine and blue skies. The field trip took us to Westville; a town set in Georgia of 1850. Relocating period homes, buildings and shops from all across Georgia, this town was created preserving this bit of history. We were very lucky to visit on the “hands on” day. Hands-on day is a chance for visitors to participate with the villagers in typical daily activities of 1850. Our group helped bake gingerbread in a wood burning stove and we all helped sew a quilt that will be used in one of the houses. The children enjoyed playing games with two little girls dressed in period costume. They really enjoyed playing “hoops”. At the potter’s shop, we all made clay creations and were able to take our artwork home with us. At the blacksmith’s shop we learned how to hammer hunks of steel into nails. At the carpenter’s shop, all of us participated in making a strand of rope dubbed the “TORCH rope”. The children learned about yard brooms and used them to sweep the back yard behind the cobbler’s shop. Candle making was also a big hit. We made tallow candles by repeatedly dipping a wick in a hot caldron of tallow (animal fat). The children were able to take their candles home with them. Inside the cobblers shop the children made leather bracelets that they wore with pride. At one house we were able to churn butter and make lye soap. Unbelievably, the children loved washing clothes in wooden wash tubs using a washboard. We had a picnic and all road a wagon pulled by two mules named “Big Red” and “Little Red”. It was a long drive, but was well worth it. The children are anxiously awaiting their next field trip. If you know a family that may enjoy a field trip with us, please don’t forget to invite them.
